    • MEN: NC State 197, UNC 97

While the Big Ten has had a couple of rivalry meets this weekend, NC State had its first home dual meet of the season, hosting ACC rival UNC. The Wolfpack dropped UNC on both the men’s and women’s sides.

WOMEN’S MEET

Freshmen led the way for the NC State women, combining for six total individual wins between three swimmers. The big performer was Kylee Alons, who clocked three victories for herself. She won both butterfly events, going 53.63 in the 100 and 1:57.84 in the 200. In the 100 free, she posted a 49.00. For Alons, those are lifetime bests in the 200 fly and 100 free. Granted, she didn’t race either of those events individually at mid-season, though she was 49.61 leading off NC State’s 400 free relay at the Indiana Invite.

Meanwhile, Emma Muzzy swept the backstrokes and Sophie Hansson took the 100 breast. Muzzy was 53.10 in the 100 back, ahead of her senior teammate Elise Haan (53.68). In the 200 back, she was 1:55.85, while Hansson posted a 1:00.75. Haan was 24.73 leading off NC State’s winning 200 medley relay (1:38.07), and then Hansson’s 27.42 breast split put them well ahead of UNC.

Sophomores Julia Poole and Kate Moore went head-to-head in the 200 free and 200 IM. Poole got the 200 free win, 1:48.69 to 1:49.12, while Moore got her revenge in the 200 IM, 2:00.03 to 2:00.55. Another sophomore, Tamila Holub, took the 1000 with a 9:53.65.

Ky-lee Perry won the 50 free in 22.27, her only individual race of the meet. Perry has gone 22-lows multiple times in dual meets this season, signaling a full recovery from an elbow dislocation that kept her from competing at the 2018 ACC Championships.

For UNC, freshman Lilly Higgs won the 200 breast (2:17.19), their sole winner of the day.

MEN’S MEET

Andreas Vazaios of NC State won the 200 IM and 100 back in his two individual events. In the 200 IM, his time of 1:46.03 won by over four seconds. While this is only the second dual meet for Vazaios this season, he took six tenths off of his old dual meet season best. In the 100 back, Vazaios was 47.53, just able to get by UNC’s Alvin Jiang (47.55).

Vazaios posted a 22.12 leading off the 200 medley relay, where NC State went 1-2 in times of 1:27.35 and 1:27.62. Nyls Korstanje split 20.84 fly on their B relay, as both relays had a 22-low back leg, a 24-point breast leg, and a 19-point free anchor.

Jack McIntyre swept the distance races, clocking a 9:11.67 in the 1000 free and a 4:29.65 in the 500 free. NC State won the rest of the freestyle races down the distance spectrum, too. Noah Hensley took the 200 free (1:37.48), with Jacob Molacek going 44.04 in the 100 free and Justin Ress posting a 20.18 in the 50 free.

Polish breaststroker Rafal Kusto did appear for the Wolfpack, just doing individual events, after joining the program mid-season. He was 55.52 in the 100 breast for 4th, where NC State’s Daniel Graber won in 54.80, while he took 2nd in the 200 breast (2:00.01).

The 200 breast went to UNC’s Valdas Abaliksta (1:58.51), while Jiang was 47.87 to win the 100 fly for the Tar Heels.

To close out the meet, NC State fielded two relays that went 1-2, and both went 1:19.

It’s an interesting case study. Deselm took over in 2007 and was Comfort’s head assistant the year before that. UNC was still a great program on both the men and women’s side for a while after that. It’s not like Deselm’s leadership spelled disaster for UNC. IN 2013 the women’s program placed 12th (without Peacock who had medical issues that year!) and Luchsinger made the World Champs team. Peacock was a national champ just before that and UNC swimmers were often on WUGs rosters. That was pretty deep into Deselm’s tenure and not that long ago. Why have the past four years been such a steady decline? Has NC State’s rise just been so rapid that it cast a huge… Read more »

All of the above. His first few classes were great due to the excitement of a new coach at UNC and an excellent recruiter in Litzinger, the presence of Catherine Vogt, and the lack of a powerful NC State and Louisville. Also social media and personality had less to do with recruiting at that point than now.

Over time while they had a lot of individual success with some big name recruits, but they still struggled developing their lesser ranked/known recruits so they could never break through and win an ACCs or really jump at ncaas. Bottom line is they struggled wit consistency. Eventually recruits took notice.

At the same time that happened, Holloway arrived, Louisville arrived, Vogt left, and… Read more »

I was recruited when DeSelm was assistant coach under Frank Comfort. Frank was the rerecruiter…you could barely carry on a conversation with Rich. He is a glorified assistant coach….just not a head coach.

Comfort was always a better recruiter than technique teacher. Heard his recruiting pitch a few times.

He may not be aware of UNC’s massive academic scandal and that UNC was put on academic probation by SACS.

Congrats to NC State…one of the top 3 coaches in the USA. Sorry for UNC kids.Coach DeSelm has always been a class act..my money says he will pull the plug after this season.

Betting the farm?

It was a rout by both the men and women. Numerous 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4 finishes. In the women’s 200 IM, the 3 Pack women in the B heat beat the top UNC finisher in the A heat. It was a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 sweep. Ouch.

This goes beyond Deselming….

no one under 46 in 100 free. a 1:53 and 1:54 in 200 fly. No one under 4:38 in 500 free…. and now even the diving stinks…. that roster is Alvin Jiang, a decent breaststroker, and a bunch of cardboard cutouts….

So when will the UNC athletics department get smart and clean staff?

It’s more than performance. He’s been there a long time. He’s a really nice guy who is well liked. His best recruiter us at ND and his training methods are old school to put it kindly. Not easy.

Amazing to see how far UNC has fallen out of the game.

Honestly curious and not trying to troll: I’ve heard this lament about UNC for a while. When was UNC last really good? I know they’ve had some studs like Luchsinger, but I feel like they haven’t been a top team since I’ve been following D1 swimming more closely about a decade ago.

The mens team has never been more than okay. Women meanwhile has had amazing swimmers.

I beg to differ. When I was there we were top 15 consistently. Not sure what you are talking about. NC State was the opposite….the joke of the league….things have changed.

Before Braden came, NC State men’s team had already won 24 ACC championships. The most of any ACC teams. The joke of the league indeed.

Before Braden came you all had Brooks Teal….tell me how that went. Mostly all of the championships for NC State happened in the 1960s and 1970s. They had a decent team with David Fox, who helped Esterling’s recruiting a bit…

Willis Casey, Don Easterling, Frank Comfort, Mark Bernardino were among the best ACC swim coaches for their respective era’s. No need to disrespect the past leaders. State swimming had a downturn before Braden Holloway arrived. He raised the bar for the ACC and UVA & Louisville are competing. I’m sure that UNC will correct their slide and get competitive again too.

The Wolfpack both men and women just dominated. Both teams are so deep! Looks like the women’s team rise is happening. Congratulations to both squads. ACC titles for both teams are in the cards.

They dominated but wouldn’t say men’s team
Is much better for worse than years past-same level…women better though.

The bigger story is just how awful UNC has become on both women and men….they really are at the bottom of their program in history. DeSelm tried to hide it this year with a softer schedule and false positive quotes. They are trying to reach out to alumni and alumni aren’t interested. This meet exposed the truth and it will be more exposed next week and ACCs. It was clear last year, not sure what nonsense he told the AD for more time
