Erin Gallagher of South Africa continued to impress tonight in Hangzhou, lowering her own hours-old National and Continental Record in the women’s 100m freestyle.
This morning during heats, the 19-year-old stopped the clock at 53.09 to produce a new personal best by .25 and register the aforementioned new standards. In that swim, Gallagher split solidly in 25.08/28.01 to produce her best time.
Flash forward to tonight’s final, however, and the budding star stepped up to the challenge, surrounded by big guns such as Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Heemskerk of Netherlands. Gallagher, who turns 20 years of age on December 18th, cranked out an even faster mark of 52.70, dipping under the 53-second barrier for the first time in her career.
Registering splits of 24.91/27.79, Gallagher put together a finals-worthy swim, placing the South African right in the mix as the 7th seed.
