Update: After Curl turned himself in to the sheriff on Thursday, a release by the police department says that a warrant was issued Tuesday, despite the state’s continued denials that a warrant has been issued.
The Montgomery County Police Department is denying that an arrest warrant has been issued in the state of Maryland for Rick Curl, despite earlier reports from ConcussionInc.net.
According to Maryland police, if a warrant had been requested by the District Attorney’s office in Maryland and granted by the District Court, it would have been immediately available in their system. At our request, the Maryland State Attorney’s Office checked its warrants database and could not locate any warrant having been issued for Mr. Curl. Police would not comment further, citing the case as an “ongoing investigation”.
In his original report, Muchnik states that “The State of Maryland has obtained an arrest warrant for Rick Curl for the crimes he committed against Kelley Currin, law enforcement sources today told ConcussionInc.net.”
Curl has been at the center of an investigation since the Washington Post broke the news in July that he had signed a non-disclosure agreement in the 1980’s with his former swimmer Kelley Currin. Currin has since filed complaints with several agencies that she was sexually abused by Curl decades ago as a minor at his Curl Burke Swim Club, which has since reorganized and changed their name without Curl’s involvement.
This does not mean that a warrant has not been issued, or is not going to be issued in the near future, but we have been able to confirm that as of posing time on Wednesday evening, no such warrant existed in records where they should exist. Given the late hour in Maryland, there would not likely be any further action on the matter until Thursday morning.
SwimSwam will keep a watch on this story and provide an update if the situation changes.

Are you an atty or are you just guessing? A lot depends on whether it is just dropped by the prosecutor, if any plea is accepted, or if CUrl and his atty prefer to go to a trial with a jury and hope for a mistrial or an acquittal. A plea for this charge is not good, maybe some reduced jail time but still possibly a plea with 10 instead of 15 years in jail and still pleading guilty and registering as a sex offender is not what most people could take. Also a plea with no jail time may still mean pleading guilty and registering as a sex offender. I have read of teachers who refuse the above pleas… Read more »
It is 15 years not 25 years for the one felony charge in the Rick Curl case. She made it all up. He never had any kind of relationship with her nor no one. He coached her that is all. Montgomery County MD Police and Prosecutors are to stupid to look at all the facts, all her lies, all the truthful eye witnesses who confirmed he only has behaved properly to her and everyone. Any person can sue, any one can file a police charge or criminal complaint. And even any conviction or losing a lawsuit is still just an opinion of one or more persons who could be wrong. Never assume any charge is 100% correct and especially child… Read more »
@JCOACH so Irv has his own personal revenge/agenda to go after USA Swimming, but he has no personal experience in USA Swimming. This is good information to understand what angle he is coming from. People who know the sport and have been around it for a long time understand that his message is destructive. Thanks for filling in.
How can you say that a parent of a club swimmer has no personal experience in USA Swimming?
Yeah, if you’ve been on the “inside” of swimming for all these years, you know that coaches fooling around and taking advantage of their young swimmers is just “how it is”. You know that true love can strike at any time between a man in his 30s and a 14 year old girl, and who are we to tell them that it’s wrong? We really need to keep these non swimming people out of our sport- they really threaten the great culture that we’ve created.
exactly, Chas…other entities such as cycling & mlb have done such a wonderful job of governing themselves and upholding policy & ethics, why would any other need some “non-entity people” to step in to make sure there is no oversight on the part of the heads of the organization? Obviously our governing body seems to be keeping a handle on things.
I love the sarcasm, and the point where you suggest that this issue has become a part of the culture is really, really, stomach turning. That is a big assertion, but at this point, one that I don’t think is too far off the mark as it seems to be growing in to an epidemic. And CUBU seems to… Read more »
An update from Montgomery County Police
Braden, why did you choose to post this if it is not true? Do you want to be associated with Irv Muchnick the ‘shock jock’ against USA Swimming? His headlines look like they could be front page on the National Enquirer. He is repulsive and does not care one iota about the sport of swimming. He has no background or interest in the sport of swimming either. I went to ConcussionInc and there are many posts Irv has about rapists, pedophiles, and schemes – all the catchy headlines so he can sell himself. The most recent ones are on NBAC and a very well known coach. Did this not interest you or SWIMSWAM? There’s another one about Richard Quick, Mark… Read more »
It actually seems that Braden was trying to bring information – contrary to what was on concussioninc.net – to set the story straight.
And saying Mushnik has no background or interest in swimming is wrong. I am pretty sure his interest lies in that his daughter was/is on a USA Swimming club where a coach was accused of improprieties. It may have even been a coach who he believes USA Swimming let slide through the system.
And, unfortunately, SCAQ Tony is right.
He just got arrested!
Thank you, Braden. I see those posts a lot and hate reading them. I appreciate that you don’t let those types of comments stay on here!!!
Despite the publicity this situation has attracted, a prosecutor trying a case that is 25+ years old faces a very tough burden – and I would think the prosecutor in MD would think long and hard before committing to spend substantial resources on this case – and diverting those resources from much more pressing and immediate crimes. Curl has clearly been embarassed and paid a price – if anything, a quick plea would be worked out and then the prosecutor moves on.
