PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving honors for the week ending Oct. 21.
Male Swimmer of the Week
Colby Prouty * Fr. * UConn
In his first collegiate home meet, Prouty swam for two wins in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes to help the UConn men’s team capture its first dual meet victory of the season. The Huskies outlasted Southern Connecticut State 168-104. Prouty’s 100 breaststroke time of 57.71 ranks top four in The American. He won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:10.20.
Female Swimmer of the Week
Haley Benjamin * Fr. * Houston
Benjamin continued to have an impressive debut season with two first-place finishes, as the freshman’s performance helped the Cougars to wins over in-state foes, SMU and North Texas in double dual meet action. Benjamin won the 1,000 freestyle (10:23.21) and the 500 freestyle (5:02.40). Both her times rank top three in The American this season and were the fastest among conference swimmers over the weekend.
Female Diver of the Week
Monica Marcello * Sr. * UConn
Marcello, the Huskies’ senior captain, returned to the pool after missing the 2017-18 season with an injury and won both the one and three-meter dives, setting a pool record with a score of 309.89 in the one meter. She scored 316.87 in the three meter, as her team defeated Southern Connecticut, 175-102, and Central Connecticut State, 164-82. Both of her marks meet the NCAA Zone Diving standards and are ranked in the NCAA’s top 25. Her scores rank the highest among divers in The American this year.
