DELHI, N.Y. – SUNY Delhi Director of Athletics Bob Backus has announced the hiring of Mike Burud as the college’s new men’s and women’s swimming and diving head coach beginning with the 2018-19 season. A four-year swimmer and 2014 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Burud comes to Delhi after spending the last four years as an assistant coach at Marist College. He will oversee the team’s transition to NCAA Division III and the program’s first year competing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).

“With our recent acceptance into the AMCC, this is an exciting new chapter for our swimming program, and we welcome Coach Burud to SUNY Delhi to guide the Broncos,” said Backus. “I’m confident that he will utilize his diverse swimming background to lead our swimmers and divers for success over the next several years as we plunge into the NCAA!”

About Mike Burud:

“I am so ready and excited to roll my sleeves up and get to work! I’m really looking forward to being a part of the SUNY Delhi team. I hope to start things off by laying an excellent foundation for swimmers to come and excel in the classroom as well as the pool. A huge thank you to Bob Backus and the search committee for selecting me to lead the team heading into its first year with the NCAA. Go Broncos!”

From 2014 to 2018, Mike Burud was part of the coaching staff at NCAA Division I Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he recently earned his Master’s in Business Administration with a focus in Ethical Leadership. Over the last four seasons, Burud helped continue the women’s team’s dominance at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships with team titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017 to mark eight straight league crowns. He also aided in the men’s team placing second at the MAAC Championships in each of his four years and posting a stellar 10-1 dual record this past season. A total of 27 varsity records fell between the men’s and women’s programs during Burud’s time with the Red Foxes.

Burud also worked extensively in the USA Club Swimming realm as a coach within the Metropolitan LSC. Under his guidance, swimmers on the Northern Dutchess Aquatic Club as well as The Red Fox Aquatic Club have qualified for meets such as Sr. Metropolitan Championships, Speedo Sectionals, and Junior Nationals. He has fostered lasting impressions on kids throughout both teams.

Burud is a native of Red Hook, NY and attended Red Hook Central High School. He competed at the Empire State Games all four years of high school, winning seven gold medals and four silver medals, and qualified all four years for the Speedo Championship Sectional Meet. The former Raider competed for Northern Duchess Aquatic Club, setting numerous records which still stand today.

His talents took him to St. Bonaventure University, a NCAA Division I Franciscan college in western New York. He was a team captain his senior year, during which he set a school record in the 200m breaststroke, while earning a NCAA ‘B’ qualifier and third place at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in the 100m breaststroke. Burud helped the team to back-to-back A-10 Championships for the first time in school history his junior and senior years in 2013 and 2014. He graduated with a Bachelors in Sports Studies, minoring in Sports Management and Business Administration.
