Olympic gold medalist Ricky Berens revealed via Twitter today that he will be returning to Austin to serve as a volunteer assistant for the University of Texas.
Berens is a former swimmer for Eddie Reese and the Longhorns, but since graduating in 2010 has been living and training at USC with the Trojan Swim Club.
And here’s the bigger news – When asked by a follower if he would be swimming there or just coaching, he said “And will be swimming.” That means that Berens has reconsidered his previous announcement that he would be retiring.
Berens now has three Olympic medals: two golds from the 2008 and 2012 800 free relays, and a silver from the 2012 400 free relay.
While at Texas as an undergrad, Berens was one of the keys, and probably the key, to the 2010 NCAA Championship Team. He was also the recipient of 21 NCAA All-American awards, and a part of two NCAA Championship 800 free relay teams. He will be volunteering with the program alongside another former Longhorn great, and Olympic gold medalist, Ian Crocker.
I remember Ricky saying in an interview that at some point he wanted to go get a masters (i think in business, though i could be wrong…). I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also working on that degree as well. great opportunity to do both! good for him.
Mel, since you live in Austin, I expect many GMM interviews (LIVE!!!… not skype lol).
Specifically, it looks like Ricky will be assisting with the Men’s team, and Ian will be assisting with the Women’s team.

I might be misunderstanding this completely, but it might be Rebecca is taking a job abroad…in London. Cannot say I chagrin that for a young person. Great city and looks like this job would be in the West End between Hyde Park and Regents Park. That is a wonderful spot, albiet VERY expensive. Don’t know and could not devine what that means for her swimming, IF this is the case.
Looks to be a conference in London that runs for a few days, with Soni as a keynote speaker for the event.

I’m surprised,I would have thought he would have stayed in Cal. and pursued a different career there,he is a very personable charismatic guy. I just don’t see him as a volunteer coach, unless of course he wants to keep swimming and thinks going back to his roots is best for him.
