Sprint News 9/6/12: Vanderkaay Receives Honor; McGill to Volunteer at Auburn; Former NC State Coach Gets New Gig

…2012 U.S. Olympic finalist Tyler McGill has joined the crew of high-profile swimmers who will kick off their coaching careers next season, as Auburn yesterday named his as a volunteer assistant. As much of Auburn’s post-grad training group has moved away this off-season, it seems as though McGill, a butterflier, will remain in the same place he’s trained for the last 5 years under the ever-watchful eye of Brett Hawke. If the NCAA were to hold a coaches relay, the Tigers would be sitting very pretty. In addition to their head coach Hawke, a former NCAA Champion in the 50 free, they’ve added McGill and Demarae Christensen to their staff this season, both of whom have huge resumes as athletes to their names…

…Davidson has announced the hiring of rising young coach Josh Graham as their newest assistant. Graham will head down the coast from his old role as the lead senior coach for South Eastern Virginia Aquatics, including a rock-solid group of 13-14 boys that broke just about every Virginia State free relay record available to them this year. Graham himself is a former Big Ten scorer for Penn State, and held the Virginia State Record in the 200 free before it was broken by Dave Walters. Graham is young, he only graduated from Penn State in 2009, but he has apparently proven himself enough to earn the role as the team’s lead recruiter. To take such a big step at such a young age gives Graham a huge opportunity to rise through the ranks of college coaching. The Davidson men placed 2nd in the CCSA last season, and the women finished 6th…

…St. Andrews University in North Carolina has announced Brooks Teal as the head coach of their brand-new men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs that will begin competition in the 2013-2014 season. Teal is a former assistant at Clemson, who was left without a job after the Tigers’ program came to an end after last season. Teal is a huge-name coach for such a small program to begin with: he spent 11 years as the head coach at North Carolina St. (including during the Cullen Jones era), and before that as the head coach at James Madison. St. Andrews had competed in Division II of the NCAA, but this year took a bit of a change of course and began competition in the NAIA…

…The University of Michigan Health System has declared September 7th as Peter Vanderkaay Day. The four-time Olympic medalist will be in Ann Arbor on Friday accepting the 2nd annual Champions for Children award from the C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. Vanderkaay, during nearly a decade of training at Michigan, was a frequent visitor to the children’s hospital, writing on his personal website that “I also try to be as involved as possible at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan. Giving back to the community is important to me because I have been very fortunate to have had a lot of help from others in my life.” Vanderkaay, who now trains in Gainesville, Florida, won a bronze medal in London in the individual 400 free and was named a captain of Team USA…
