Sprint News 8/14/12: Northwestern Hires; Houston Legend Steps Down; NBC Picking Up Paralympics

…the Northwestern Wildcats have announced the hiring of Andrew Sheaff as a new assistant for the men’s swimming team. Sheaff previously worked under Wildcats head coach Jarod Schroeder in Maryland, while Schroeder was the interim head coach during the 2007-2008 season. Sheaff swam at Pitt as an undergrad, and has other college coaching experience at Bucknell University. Sheaff’s biggest asset to this team, though, is his knowledge of human physiology. As swimming moves more and more toward in-depth science, experience like Sheaff’s can be invaluable to a program. He spent time as an intern with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns working in sports performance and has a Masters’ Degree in exercise physiology…

…The Houston swimming community was aflutter this weekend as news spread that Clayton Cagle has resigned as the head coach of the Cy-Fair Swim Club (better known as FLEET). Cagle was at the helm of the program for 22 years, and developed it into one of the best age group and junior-level programs in the country. Among his trainees are Olympians Andrew Livingston and Jamie Rauch, as well as more recently National High School Record holder Cole Cragin. Internationally, he was an assistant on the 2001 Goodwill Games squad, and the head coach of a Junior National Team that went to Australia in 2006. He has a big administrative role in Texas swimming too, both as a member of the Board of Directors of Gulf Swimming and as a chair of the elite Texas Senior Circuit meet. This is a very large program that routinely sends double-digit swimmers to college, and has its own 50 meter facility, and the position will be a highly coveted one…

…The USOC has announced a ton of Paralympic coverage in the United States. In addition to the 700 hours of live swimming offered by the International Paralympic Committee on their website (www.paralympic.org), the USOC (which governs both Olympic and Paralympic sports) has set up a YouTube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/USParalympics). They have also negotiated for highlights packages on NBC, the NBC Sports Network, and Universal Sports. The swimming competition will all be aired online live, with full English Commentary. For a full rundown of all of the coverage available, see the release here

Alisha’s account to me of Clayton’s actions in 2008‐2010.

‐ talked to her about his personal sex life.
‐ took Alisha out to lunch for her birthday 2010 and bought and gave her gifts

‐ spoke of the female athletes in a sexual manner on a consistent basis.

For the record: I made no complaints about Clayton’s “druken jokes” in January 2011 or any other time. I was not involved with Fleet, gulf swimming or USA swimming in January of 2011.

I am an LAC parent and I have read all of the comments posted here regarding Coach Cagle. I stumbled upon this blog because I have been looking for information as to why he left Fleet after such a long history with that team. (Unless you are on the board, parents don’t get that kind of information). I must say that what I have read here is disturbing and before I allow my kid to swim for him here on his National level team, I would truly appreciate knowing the truth about this man. So if anyone can direct me to honest information, I would be very grateful.
Thank you so much. Nancy

I would NOT suggest this site as having that type of information..Go to your board or inquire at the Gulf website to see if they have any ongoing investigation. If you don’t think your board would be honest…take your kids to another team..

Gulf Swimming would not be doing an investigation. Any sexual accusations go directly to USA Swimming (and if sent to the Gulf, the Gulf BOD has to immediately turn it over to USA Swimming).

Still no coach?

We heard that Pat Hogan, head of the USA Swimming Club Development Department, dispatched Dave Thomas to go down to Houston and get things straightened out. Since Dave (and others in Club Development) doesn’t know anything about running a successful club, he was unsuccessful. However, we heard Dave did find a few good hamburger joints and the Houston Chronicle is going to run a feature story about it…

no coach , yet…think once there are board elections in October everything will resolve itself. Kids are working hard, and the new Head Age Group Coach is acting as the interim head coach. Fleet family will do what is right…Let’s let the ballot box speak for what is best for the club.

Dave did not come out to visit Fleet. Thank you though for using an anonymous posting board for taking a bash at Dave.

Fleet is still searching for a head coach. Until then, the newly hired head age group coach is acting as interim head coach. Things are stablizing and returning to normal. Some of the changes brought by the coaching staff are a breath of fresh air and its getting the kids excited again. The coaches are doing an outstanding job, especially given the circumstances, and it’s showing in the kids attitudes. Fleet will be ok.

“Really? Last I looked the Coach and the female parents were all grown ups. What happens behind closed doors is NO ONES business. Did he harm a child? People who live in glass houses should not throw stones!”

Look fleet people, Cagle is gone (does not matter why- it is what it is at this point and that will not change) and he is not coming back. If we could put half as much energy into welcoming the new coach we have now and supporting the board in finding the next spot that needs to be filled, we would be well served.

Dont you think prospective coaches read this blog?? Would you want to coach based on posts here? Lets get serious people, we as parents are gonna kill any chamce our kids have to get the best coaching talent that is out there.

If anyone is unhappy with current board, quit whining and put your $$… Read more »

We shall see. You are a very angry person with incorrect information. Again, we shall see how all this turns out. Call Cagle, arrange a meet and we all get together face to face.
