Spain, Russia, Netherlands off to the Super Final

After six European preliminary rounds played from November 2017 to May 2018, Spain, Russia and the Netherlands secured a berth to the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final, to be held in Kunshan (CHN) from May 28 to June 2.  The Super Final is a tournament that gathers the best European teams and the best Asian, American and Oceania teams.

In last night’s ultimate round, the Netherlands narrowly beat by one goal Spain in Madrid, for a final score of 11-10 (2-3, 3-2, 4-2, 2-3), and Russia defeated Hungary 13-11 in St-Petersburg (4-3, 3-3, 3-4, 3-3).

Spain finish atop of the European rankings with 11 points, while Russia and the Dutch have 9 points. Hungary has 7 points.

1. ESP 11 pts (4 wins, 2 loss); 2. RUS 9 pts (3W, 3L); 3. NED 9 pts (3W, 3L); 4. HUN 7 pts (2W, 4L)

The teams qualified for the Super Final following the Inter-Continental Cup are: USA, Australia and Canada, China and Japan.

In 2017, the Super Final took place in Shanghai with Australia, Canada, China, Hungary, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia and the United States competing.  The United States defeated Canada 12-6 to clinch its 11th FINA Women’s World League Super Final crown.
