On the 2nd day of the 2018 Australian Age Champs, freestyle star Ariarne Titmus was a no-show again, signalling that she may not be competing in the meet at all following her triple gold medal performance at the Commonwealth Games a couple weeks ago.

There weren’t any age records on day 2, but there were plenty of impressive swims. Kate Harrison won the girls 13 100 fly by 2.01 seconds, posting a speedy 1:00.98 to claim the title. Harrison was out very fast, hitting the 50 mark in 28.19, and fell off a bit coming home in 32.79, but finished in a great time overall. While she was 1.01 seconds off the Australian 13 and under record of 59.97 by Yolane Kukia, that is the fastest time in the world this year for a 13 year old.

Csongor Cellie won the boys 16 400 free with a 3:55.96, running down runner-up Silas Harris (3:56.67). Cellie was slightly behind Harris going into the last 50, but outsplit Harris 28.19 to 29.09 on the final 50, charging into the wall first. Sophie Healy won the girls 13 200 IM in a tight race, posting a 2:20.61. Elizabeth Deckers came in 2nd with a 2:20.99, Ella Ramsay came in 3rd in 2:21.37, Kate Harrison came in 4th with a 2:21.78, and Anna Lee was 5th in 2:21.93.

17-year-old Leon Macalister won the boys 17-18 100 back with a 55.89, getting his hand on the wall before runner-up, 18-year-old Lewis Blackburn (56.28). Macalister split 27.29/28.60. Jesse Coleman won the boys 13 100 fly with a 58.74. He out-touched William Salmond (58.91) after splitting a full second faster than him on the 2nd 50, 30.74 to 31.74.

Brendon Smith (17) won the boys 17-18 400 IM with a 4:20.07, passing runner-up Nathan Robinson (4:20.44) on the free leg to claim victory.

What 13 year olds in the US can challenge that? Who’s the closest so far?

Most USA age groupers haven’t done a tapered LCM yet this season. According to the USA swimming data base our fastest 13 year old girl swimmer last season (ending in 8/29/17) was a 1:00.89

Mind-blowing; The British age 13 record is 1.02.50 – set just a few months ago – But that is by default as BS use the ‘age on 31st December’ system. The fastest swim by a British 13yo I can find is a 1.01.28 by Ellen Gandy.

I can’t fathom sub 60s by 13 years olds.

I’d believe that. Soccer is so dominant there most kids probably just grow up wanting to play soccer and maybe they branch out later

It’s an interesting topic that I’ve commented on before.

Serena & Venus Williams’ dad would be a social pariah in Britain – He coached his girls religiously, as young athletes, and that is a huge taboo here. In Britain, children do sport for fun, and expectations are a bit of a no-no over there – suggest any hope of sporting success for your child and the phrase ‘pushy parent’ and judgemental eyes will be flying your way in no time. That’s the fundamental reason in my opinion – It isn’t until young swimmers hit 14/15 that we start thinking of them as potential elite athletes (imo) and apply the appropriate, manageable workload to develop their talent.

Too bad Flee never cranked out a good one. Didnt know she was 59 at 13! She was very consistent throughout her career.
