Johnny Darguzas from Waynesville, North Carolina has signed an NLI to swim for East Carolina University next fall, joining fellow class of 2022 commits Ethan Knorr and Hunter Pigg.
“I’m thrilled to commit to East Carolina University and join the Pirate Nation. Being a part of this awesome swim program and pursuing my academic goals…make this the perfect fit for me.”
Darguzas is a senior at Tuscola High School and swims for both his high school and Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club. As reported by Mike Schoeffel in The Mountaineer, it was Darguzas’ excellent meet at Cary Sectionals that led to a call from ECU. At the meet he dropped 2.6 in the 200 back to finish 12th, 2 in the 500 free (17th place), 1.2 in the 200 fly (20th), and 5.2 in the 400 IM (17th); he also placed 23rd in the 100 fly. The previous month he had gone best times in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM at North Carolina LSC Senior Short Course Championships. Most recently, he improved his lifetime bests in the 100/200/1000 free and 100 back at Tarheel States.
In high school swimming, Darguzas placed 7th in the 200 IM (1:58.28) and 9th in the 100 fly (52.99) at the 2018 3A State NCHSAA Championships. He holds school records in the 200 free and 200 IM individually, and on the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
