Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay: Hope Lights Our Way

With just over 800 days to go until the opening ceremonies, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic organizing committee revealed its vision for the Olympic torch relay. Encompassed by the phrase, ‘Hope Lights Our Way’, the relay will strive to ‘bring the Japanese people together around messages of support, acceptance and encouragement of one another, while also reflecting the Olympic flame’s ability to promote peace and hope to the world.’

Per the high-level plans, all 47 of Japan’s prefectures will be visited by the torch through its journey, with the relay spending 3 days each in the prefectures of Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagii. Those areas represent those most highly affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, with the relay showcasing ‘the recovery of the areas and highlight the indomitable spirit of their inhabitants.’

The torch will grace Tokyo Metropolitan area with the most number of days at 15, with the aim of allowing as many people as possible to view the relay amidst Japan’s regional and national landmarks.

The specific route itself, as well as the exact ending point is still to be determined.
