There were some abnormalities in today’s 200 medley relay prelims at the 2018 Women’s NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to Tennessee’s Erika Brown mistakenly swimming the wrong stroke, we also saw Virginia Tech get a re-swim after the heats. The Hokies, who swam next to Tennessee, had initially finished 22nd in 1:37.95. They improved their time to 1:37.13 the 2nd time around, moving up to 9th and missing the A final by less than a tenth.
A representative for Virginia Tech tells SwimSwam that the team was granted a re-swim because the meet referee determined that their leadoff swimmer was not given the same opportunity as other athletes due to a disturbance from an official. Backstroker Klaudia Nazieblo improved her split by a tenth in the 2nd swim. Her teammates were all faster as well.
SPLITS COMPARISON: INITIAL SWIM VS. RE-SWIM
Team | 50 back split | 50 breast split | 50 fly split | 50 free split | Final time |
Virginia Tech (Initial Swim) | Klaudia Nazieblo- 24.37 | Joelle Vereb- 27.62 | Maggie Gruber- 23.46 | Adriana Grabski- 22.53 | 1:37.95 |
Virginia Tech (Re-Swim) | Klaudia Nazieblo- 24.23 | Joelle Vereb- 27.18 | Maggie Gruber- 23.37 | Adriana Grabski- 22.35 | 1:37.13 |
They should give every team a “re-swim” This is not right
What could the disturbance have been?
Bad officiating by a turn judge
This is weird. This has been a kinda weird meet
And it’s weird they all went faster, right?
