Cincinnati Marlins Sobolewski Breaks 38-Year-Old Record

Cincinnati Marlins standout Scott Sobolewski broke the Keating Natatorium 100-yard Breaststroke record that has eluded countless competitors since 1980. The previous record of 55.46 was set 38 years ago by 1980 Olympian and Cincinnati Marlins Hall of Famer Glenn Mills.

Sobolewski lowered the new 100-yard Breaststroke pool record to 55.33. Keating Natatorium is the home pool of the Cincinnati Marlins.

“We are very excited about Scott’s record-breaking achievement,” said Cincinnati Marlins Head Coach, Brad Isham. “Scott approaches swimming with a very quiet, humble enthusiasm. He sets goals, this among them, and puts in the hard work to achieve them, so this is a very well deserved accomplishment,” said Isham

Sobolewski, a sophomore at St. Xavier HS had the pool record-breaking time in his sights after recording 55.17 in the 100-yard Breaststroke at the Ohio High School State meet in Canton, Ohio, where he finished second place.

Another Cincinnati Marlins’ swimmer making record-breaking waves is St. Xavier Senior Justin Grender. Earlier this season, Grender tied 1992 and 1996 Olympian Joe Hudepohl’s 50-yard Freestyle Cincinnati Marlins team record. Hudepohl’s team record of 20.01 was set in 1991. Grender, an Ohio High School State Champion has committed to swim at the University of Virginia in the fall.

Grender and Sobolewski will have an opportunity to improve upon their history-making performances when they travel to compete in the TYR Junior National Championship Cup meet in Lynchburg, Virginia later this month.
