Ralph Lauren Unveils US Opening Ceremony Garb

Ralph Lauren has unveiled the design for the United States’ Opening Ceremony in London. The look will feature a fitted navy blazer over white shirt and white pants (or skirt), with a red and navy necktie.

The look will be strikingly similar to the one designed for the Australian team, though the Aussies will look more “business casual” in khaki and blazers with less detail than the Americans. Though those outfits raised eyebrows as well, with sneakers chosen as accompanying footwear.

The coup-de-etat is the rather dreadful navy beret that will top-off the ensemble, shaped a bit differently and worn in reverse as compared to the ones worn in 2008 but of the same mold. The hats complete a look that seems to fit more into the image of an over-the-top Ralph Lauren commercial than the true tastes of the modern-day Olympian. The 2008 uniforms, which were similar, seemd better put together. This year’s are just confusing.

Among the Ralph Lauren sponsored athletes are a pair of America’s best swimmers: Ryan Lochte (seen above) and Rebecca Soni.

See the models of the uniforms below.

All I can think of is Slater from Saved by the Bell, “hey Preppy!”

The berets always make them look like military. Ridiculous all around. I say let Ryan Lochte and Cullen Jones design the uniforms!!

If Lochte doesn’t look like a Polo model, I don’t know who does.

The opening ceremony uniforms make me think flight attendant. I’m guessing the first picture is the more informal closing ceremony look, and that tank top is going to be problematic for any woman that needs the support of a bra with straps. (The shelf bra thing isn’t going to work for everyone.)
