Day 2 Prelims Recap/Day 2 Finals Recap
Night 2 of the 2018 Australian Swimming Trials brought huge action to the Optus Aquatic Centre, site of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Youngster Ariarne Titmus fired off a new 400m freestyle national record, while Kyle Chalmers scored another national title, taking the men’s 100m freestyle. Cate Campbell also did her usual damage to the women’s 100m freestyle field.

All quotes courtesy of Swimming Australia.
Cate Campbell on the 50m fly: “I’ve done some good morning swims; I’m off to warm down, stay out of the sun, have a big nap and get ready to come back and do it all again tonight. Swimming the 50m butterfly (before) the 100m freestyle is just another way of warming up.
“I warm up for the 50 fly which is a lot better than warming up for the 100 freestyle. I have a blow out in the 50m which counts as warming up for the 100, have a bit of a swim off and then head back into marshaling and swimming.
“I have done enough training to swim the 50 and follow up with the 100m so I’m not too concerned.”
Mack Horton on the 400m free: “Jack went for it at the start, typically I swim a bit harder at the back end of the 400m. I didn’t quite have that easy pace at the start, so he probably got a bit more on me than I would have liked, so I had to fight a bit harder at the end.”
Jack McLoughlin on the 400m free: “With my 1500m (freestyle) background I know I have a strong back end and I know that whatever time I do in the second 100m, I’ll probably do the same just because that’s how distance swimmers work.
“I just thought I’d take it out in the second 100m and see if I could hold on. I saw Mack coming in the last 50m, but there’s not much you can do about that.
Kyle Chalmers on the 100m free: “Again, it proves to me that if I do get in lane one, I can win from outside. It was hard for me tonight because I breathe from the right, so on the way home I couldn’t see where anyone else was.”
Jack Cartwright on the 100m free: “I had no clue where anybody was. When I hit that turn, I just worked as many kicks as I could underwater and came up.
“I saw that Kyle (CHALMERS) was at the front and kept on going.
“It is going to be amazing, representing Australia. Competing in an individual swim (100m freestyle), it’s going to be awesome.”
If Rowdy reads that quote from Chalmers, we are screwed.
Why? It’s true. Every swimmers knows that he or she will likely go faster if you breath toward the side of your biggest competitor. Rowdy was a swimmer, and he knows this.
but… every…time…
No doubt, Caeleb etc. Hearing it every time, though …
He looks like a 45 year old man in that picture. Get it Kyle.
