The official NCAA invite lists won’t go out until Wednesday, but anybody with the pre-cut psych sheets, released earlier today, a spreadsheet, and an army of stat guys can do the math ahead of time to determine the invitees before they’re officially released – barring any changes to entries.
A refresher on how that process works: The NCAA will go through, event by event, and add one swimmer to each, until a certain “line” (aka, all 30th-ranked swimmers) puts the field over the maximum 281 individual entries (322 total minus 41 places for divers). At that point, swimmers will be invited based on who is the closest to the NCAA Championship Record in their event from the next line (in this case, line 37). If you want to look at the full procedure, check section 2.4 of the NCAA Pre Championship Manual.
The cut-line fell shorter than normal this year. The top 36 swimmers in each event were invited, with the alternates beginning in line 37.
The Alternates:
Most years, at least a few alternates are taken to the meet. Among other things, this happens because of late-season injuries, or teams that are at the entry cap and then have divers qualify. Only 2 teams, Stanford with 18 swimmers entered already and Texas A&M with 16, are in danger of running into roster caps this year, with divers counting as only 1/2 of a swimmer. Alternates have further hope in that teams entered at least 2 swimmers, who should receive invites, that didn’t swim at their conference championship meets due to injuries: Ky-Lee Perry of NC State, and Beryl Gastaldello of Texas A&M.

Why is the 281 such a sacred cut off point? Why not just fill heats of the various events. 8 lane pool, just fill five heats and be done.
because its the inept NCAA. Why make something simple and logical when you can prove your worth by total complication of the matter?
Because the invited swimmers will be swimming their “B cut” events too. There will be more than 36/37/38 swimmers in each event once it actualizes.
Looks like Stanford will have to leave an invited swimmer or two behind after diving entries to keep them at 18. Would that be a correct assumption here (assuming diving will qualify)? How would this impact the cut line? Would they take the swimmer that is in 37th in that event (assuming they are not already invited)? Nice to have that depth but bummer for iqualifier to be left home… Any thoughts?
“Nice to have that depth but bummer for iqualifier to be left home… Any thoughts?”
Well, one thought is that everyone on the Stanford team is pretty smart, since they got admitted to the university in the first place, and thus they all know the pros and cons of joining the current Stanford roster. It’s nice to train with Olympic gold medalists, but the downside is that you better be really fast in order to swim at NCAAs. The swim qualifier potentially left at home presumably knew that was the risk of joining that team — she could’ve joined literally any other team and been assured of qualifying. But, she chose Stanford — I assume she thinks it’s worth it,… Read more »
100% agree – Just looking for how this reshuffles the deck, or if they go to straight to alternates. Didn’t mean to be a dig on Stanford – TXAM could potentially be in same position but Stanford is already at the magical 18 w/o dive…
Texas A&M actually is closer to the roster limit than they look because one of their other swimmers who wasn’t invited, Raena Eldrige, is probably going to go as a relay only swimmer for the 200 free relay, which would leave them one roster spot for two divers. They also had two swimmers, Caitlynn Moon and Camryn Toney, who were very close to being invited which showcases how much depth the team has.
Assuming both A&M and Stanford qualify at least one diver, both teams will have have full rosters of 18 individual qualifiers since Stanford would have to leave an invited swimmer home and A&M’s Moon, as the 1st alternate, would fill the vacated slot.
Actually, Stanford probably had more than 18 swimmers qualify. Coaches typically only enter 18 in the meet even tho they are allowed to enter more into the pre selection psych sheet. But knowing they would have to cut the list to 18 today anyway, it saves a step. Diving zones is next week I believe, and then everyone will know if Stanford divers qualify, and then Gregg will have the difficult task of removing an invited swimmer from the meet.
Is Perrotta really closer to the NCAA record in the 100 breast than Moon in the 500 or Worrell in the 2fly?
My mistake, I just meant Moon since Worrell is on line 38.
For your analysis, how is Edelman (Kentucky) already included in the projected “invites” if she is line 37? Wouldn’t she be considered an alternate?
Going through line 36 doesn’t get them to the 281 total swimmers number, so they start adding swimmers from line 37 based on 1) if they aren’t already in the meet in another event and 2) how close they are % wise to the NCAA record in each event. Edelman is one of the swimmers on line 37 not already in and close enough to the NCAA record in the 2 fly to make it. My math shows Moon within 5.9% of the record in the 500 and Perrotta within 6.4% of the record in the 100 breast, which would flip them in the entered vs alternate status. But math ain’t always my strong suit so don’t take that to… Read more »
Gotcha! Thank you for the detailed response 🙂
I make my living with math and that list doesn’t make sense. Ledecky’s mile record is so fast that Kelly’s time is 7.18% out. There must be a lot of swimmers left out who are closer. I calculated Moon’s time as 6.25%.
Here’s the breakdown: there are only 2 swimmers from the 37 line who aren’t invited as of now: Moon and Kelly. Not coincidentally, they were the last two because they were both chasing Ledecky records. Remember – you’re comparing CHAMPIONSHIP Records, not OVERALL NCAA Records. So, for Moon the math is 264.06/280.57 = .941156, and for Kelly the math is 907.70/972.90 = .93298. Then, and ONLY then, do you start comparing swimmers from line 38, like your daughter. Her ranking doesn’t get to jump swimmers ranked 37th, regardless of the percentages.
But why is Perrotta in before Moon, she is not in for any other event and her percentage on the 100 breast record is .93661?
Because her ratio is .943437.
The time is compared to the (ncaa) ***CHAMPIONSHIP*** record (asterisks for emphasis).
Lilly King’s 56.30 was done at Big Tens last year. 56.71 is the CHAMPIONSHIP record.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
I finally got the manual. But looking at the psyche sheet this rule is really not fair for IMers. Almost up to the fiftieth spot they would be better than anybody else.
Virginia with 12?!?! That must be a mistake. What metric is being used?
The pysch sheet
I thought divers counted as 1/3 of a swimmer? or does that change from the conference level to NCAAs
Conferences count their divers in different ways. ACC just changed their diver count from 1/3 a spot to a full athlete while bumping the number from 18 to 21 per team roster. NCAA counts a diver as 1/2 a spot.
With major conferences having three diving events which is the same number of swimming events swimmers can compete in at a championship meet, it makes sense for divers to be a full athlete. While divers can’t swim on relays, close to half of a conference swim squad doesn’t compete on relays either. I’m happy to see the change.
What about relay swimmers who were on a relay that made in a cut, but they did not make any individual cuts? Do they count in the 281 cap?
No – A school has to have at least one individual swimmer qualify with an “A” cut for a school’s relay with an “A” cut to be invited. The relay only swimmers do not count to the 281 and can not swim an individual event (unless they have an “A” or individual invite).
I believe they have to have 1 individual swimmer INVITED, not necessarily an A cut time
AQUAMAN: https://staging2.swimswam.com/only-power-5-teams-receive-relay-invites-to-2018-womens-ncaas/
Another way to tier the top programs in the country is by the number of NCAA Championship invites they earn in relays. Under the new relay qualification systems, only the best-of-the-best programs are able to take relays to the meet. To take a relay, a team is not only required to have an individual swimmer or diver invited, but they also must hit the “Qualifying Standard” (aka “A” cut) in at least one relay. Once those two criteria are met, teams are able to take as many relays as they want, provided they all have “Provisional Standards,” aka “B” cuts.
Swimdadnerd, you have quoted SwimSwam correctly but it does not support your prior
statement that “A school has to qualify at least one individual swimmer with an A Cut …”
SwimSwam correctly used the term “invited”. A team just needs an individual to be invited, and that only requires that a swimmer have one of the fastest B cuts that fill the event up to the cap limit. No event at NCAAs has only A Cut invitees.
I bet some men are sweating a low cut line like the women! ?
We already knew the depth Stanford has, but it will suck to see a talented swimmer being left at the farm when they (most likely) have divers that qualify.
Have to see how many divers will qualify and which swimmers are the least likely to score.
Really sad to qualify for NCAA’s and not get to go! And to think, with that incoming freshman class, next year will be worse for Stanford! Only 4 seniors departing the squad after this year, while 7 “NCAA potential” freshman joining them in the fall. VERY risky if you want to compete at the highest level to represent your school! Next year they could easily have 4 NCAA invites staying home. 🙁
These potential “left behind” swimmers KNEW THAT before signing on the dotted line (NLI)
The potential “left behind” swimmers who signed believed they would NOT be left behind BUT the reality of competing for a team STACKED ends up in having these kids watching from home. It has happened many times at Texas (men) and Auburnt (men) over the years. Not hard to fathom the likelihood of this occurring with 14 full scholarships. With 9.9 hard to believe the “even playing scholarship field” is truly in place.
You know what eases the pain of qualifying and not going? Putting on your new national championship ring and writing NCAA champion on your resume. Everyone on their roster has a role and contributes to a team title in some way.
They probably get tshirt also
I swam in the women’s NCAA division 1 championships all four of my years in college and though I did not get a national championship ring or the ability to put that on my resume, I would not trade the experience of swimming in this high-level one of a kind meet for that.
