The 2018 SEC Swimming & Diving Championship will officially start on Wednesday with the 200 medley and 800 free relay timed finals, in addition to women’s 1-meter diving and men’s 3-meter diving. Meanwhile, time trials have begun on Wednesday morning in College Station. A few interesting results so far are summarized below:
- LSU’s Matthew Klotz swam a 20.04 in the men’s 50 free. That’s his lifetime best, and also a US Deaf Swimming American Record in the event. The old official record is a 20.47 done by Marcus Titus in 2015, though Klotz swam an un-ratified 20.21 at last year’s SEC Championship meet.
- LSU swam their “A” 200 free relay in a time trial. The group of Haylee Knight (22.70), Leyre Casarin (23.00), Grace Horton (22.50), and Summer Spradley (22.39) combined for a 1:30.59. That’s a season-best for them and jumps them to 7th in the SEC so far this season. The NCAA Provisional Standard is 1:29.57.
- South Carolina’s Taylor Worrell, younger sister of US Olympian Kelsi, swam a 1:56.03 in a 200 fly time trial. That’s her lifetime best by 4-and-a-half seconds. The younger Worrell has been more of a middle-distance freestyler thus far in her career (she’s an NCAA qualifier), but may be finding a late break in the family business of butterfly.
- Florida junior Brennan Balogh swam a 46.79 in the men’s 100 back, which ranks him 8th so far in the conference this season. It took 46.28 to earn an invite last season.
- Texas A&M senior Jonathan Tybur swam a 1:53.31 in the 200 breaststroke, which is the fastest time in the SEC so far this season.

You guys have ads that hijack the page. Seems to only be on mobile. I wasn’t even able to open this article on my phone because it kept happening. One was something about WalMart that seemed like a scam. I can’t remember what the others were. I’ve seen this before on your site as well. Just a heads up in case you aren’t aware.
Not sure why TAMU had Tybur swim this time trial?
Bad timing coming into those turns. Seems like he had to take too many mini strokes before the turn
what is the rationale of time trials prior to the meet? I know that if someone is there and they are trying to determine who will swim based on meet entry limitations. But i would think most of these were already swimming in the meet.
An extra shot at a cut, for the most part. Would rather time trial your best chance at NCAAs in a clean water, before you’ve got 6 races under your belt, on a day when you’re not swimming another race, than find out you missed the cut in the race and scramble to a last chance meet, or swim a Saturday time trial. In some cases, swimming a 4th individual. In the SEC, could be a reason for a swimmer to test their taper before deciding which race to swim for points.
For example – Taylor Worrell is entered in 4 individual events – 200/500/1650 free, and 200 fly. That swim makes the 200 fly a real obvious choice as… Read more »
maybe. but not sure that clean water makes up for the heat of competition. if that was the case i’d think we’d see lots of time trials in LC swimming by top athletes trying to break records. Never see that happen.
Get a swim of nerves out for a lot of people. Get into the meet. 200s of stroke are still 5 days away- a lot can happen in 5 days of swimming
I’m not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure Kentucky did a time trial to see who would race on their 800 free relay tonight.
Time trial swims very few waves, clean water and no pressure is another reason we see some fast swims. Good for everyone.
will licon will break that record without a doubt
What?
?????
Will Licon has never been a member of the SEC, and is no longer a college swimmer.
Gotta keep current SWIMMERBRITT! Gotta keep current!!
Wow nice time drop from Worrell!! Hope she has a great summer!
