Division III power MIT split with Division I Boston College on Friday in a dual meet. MIT’s men’s team is now 4-0 all-time against Boston College.

Brandon McKenzie was a double winner for MT, taking individual wins in both the 100 breaststroke (57.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:04.72). His 200 breaststroke was an NCAA consideration standard and his best swim of the season so far outside of MIT’s mid-season Winter Invite. While his 100 has been strong most of the spring semester, he had struggled in his 200 until this swim – in the team’s last two meets coming out of winter training, he was just a 2:07.0 and 2:05.7 in that event.

Josh Graves also picked up a pair for MIT, running away with dominant wins in both the 1000 free (9:39.93 – 23+ second margin) and the 500 free (4:42.83 – 9 second margin). That time in the 1000 was his season-best by over 2 seconds, while the 500 was his peak outside of the MIT Winter Invite.

In the women’s meet, Boston College was able to overcome 2 late wins by MIT in the last 2 individual events of the meet. By then, however, the Golden Eagles had built an insurmountable lead. That includes wins in both the 100 backstroke (Maura Grimes – 58.95) and 100 fly (Victoria Lin – 56.86).

The depth of the BC women got them the win, but MIT actually took the lions share with 9 wins in 16 events. That includes a breaststroke sweep from Jess Chen, who won the 100 in 1:05.38.

MIT has one remaining meet, against Amherst College on February 3rd, before the NEWMAC Championship from February 22nd-25th. Boston College will face cross-town rivals Boston University on Saturday, and also race at the BU-hosted Terrier Open from February 9th-10th before they roll into the ACC Championships in Greensboro.

I sincerely hope that the MIT men’s team is talking seriously about the goal of winning NCAAs this year. They should be. Lot’s of teams in the fight, but nobody’s unbeatable this year. Women’s meet is more like a Kenyon-Emory dual.

The Eagles will no doubt be back on top come championship season with a good taper! Also interesting no mention of BC’s Matthew Denave, swam an impressive 200 fly/200 IM -should also be noted this wasnt even his focus meet

Why would MIT rest for a bad team

It’s okay to get beat buddy. Give MIT credit as opposed to implying they needed to rest to beat Your guy’s 2:00 and 2:02 fly/IM. They did 3 doubles last week and defended their home pool on Saturday.

BC has sucked at swimming for a long time and the new coach is going to change that. It’ll take a couple years and it’ll happen.
