Akron won 11 of 13 events en route to beating Toledo in a dual meet featuring the 50 and 150 of the strokes, 300 IM, 500 free, 400 medley relay and 500 free relay.
Sadie Fazekas won 3 individual events, the 500 free, 50 back, and 150 back. In the 500, Fazekas put up her 2nd fastest time of the season, 4:54.37, which is also her fastest dual meet time of the season by 4.5 seconds. Her time in the 50 back, 26.02, just under a second off her fastest time this season – 25.06. In the 150 back, she went 1:28.92. For reference, her fastest 100 back time in a dual meet this season is 55.44.
Paloma Marrero, one of the fastest 200 breaststrokers in the NCAA, also won 3 individual events. First she took the 50 breast, posting a 29.67. In the 150 breast, Marrero put up a 1:38.78, but the more impressive part of her swim was her splits (31.61/33.47/33.68). Her best time in the 200 breast this season is 2:08.51, which ranks 9th in the NCAA this year.
Another notable performance came from Paulina Nogaj (Akron), who took the 150 free in a time of 1:21.53. Her best time in the 200 free this season is 1:51.87.

TOLEDO, Ohio- On the strength of 10 first-place finishes in 13 events, the Akron swimming and diving team notched a 158-85 win over Toledo on Saturday afternoon at the UT Recreation Center.
The relay team of sophomore Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), and senior Susan Franz started the Zips off with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay, clocking in at 3:50.21.
Akron earned the top-two spots in the 500 freestyle with a first-place finish by junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) (4:54.37), followed by freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) with a time of 5:05.43.
The Zips’ captured the top-times in the three sprint events. Fazekas captured another win in the 50 back (26.02), with Marrero earning her second first-place finish in the 50 breast (29.67). Franz led the way coming in first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.21.
Sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) won the 150 butterfly with a time of 1:31.18, closely followed by sophomore Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) with a 1:31.39 time. Fazekas tallied her second first-place finish in the 150 backstroke with a time of 1:28.92.
Marrero tallied back-to-back wins in the next two events of the meet. In the 300 IM, Marrero completed the event in 3:14.37, and touched the wall first in the 150 breaststroke with a 1:38.76 time.
In the final event of the evening, the relay team of Fazekas, Nogaj, sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), and Nebraska took the top spot clocking in with a 4:31.01 time.
The Zips return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 19 with a head-to-head dual meet versus Duquesne at the Ocasek Natatorium at 5 p.m.

Toledo, Ohio – The University of Toledo swimming & diving team held its annual senior night Saturday when it hosted the Akron Zips at the Student Recreation Center. In a special ceremony before the meet, the program’s nine seniors were honored for all of their contributions to Toledo swimming & diving.
“Today was a great day for our seniors,” said head coach Jonas Persson. “They came up big for us today in the pool and with their leadership. They are a big part of building a foundation that will last a long time here.”
While the Rockets were beaten overall in the meet by a score of 158-85, they were highlighted by several strong performances against the defending MAC champions. Senior Allison Dicke led the way for Toledo, including winning the 100 freestyle with a time of 53:12, her first individual event victory as a Rocket.
“Allison’s victory in the 100 freestyle is a big statement for our swim program,” said Persson.
As has been the case most of the season, the Rockets received major contributions from the underclassmen in Saturday’s meet. “Our freshman and sophomore classes continue to shine,” said Persson. “They show me that the future is very bright for us here.”
The Rockets will return to the pool next Friday, Jan. 19 when they travel to IUPUI to take on the Jaguars. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
