Fowler/Sculti Close 2017 USA Diving Nationals With Synchro 3-Meter Win

The 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships came to a close Tuesday morning at the Greensboro Aquatic Center with two synchronized pairs named national champions. Anne Fowler (Burke, Va./Alexandria Dive Club) and Carolina Sculti (Rye, N.Y./Marlins Diving Club) secured gold in the women’s synchronized 3-meter, while Ryan Hawkins (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale Diving Team) and Zach Cooper (Greenwood, Ind./University of Miami) took the men’s synchronized 10-meter crown.

Fowler and Sculti went into the final seeded first after amassing 266.25 points in the preliminary and added 268.05 points in the final to finish with a cumulative score of 534.30 points.

“It’s really nice to end on a good note and we trained together really hard before this,” Sculti said. “It’s been a long week with ups and downs, but it’s good ending the meet and diving like this, having everything pay off.”

Sculti’s words proved to be accurate as the duo saved their best dive of the final for last with a forward 2½ somersault 1 twist pike worth 65.70 points. Alison Gibson (Austin, Texas/University of Texas) and Krysta Palmer (Carson City, Nev./Nevada Dive Club)collected silver with 517.80 total points and Daria Lenz (Altadena, Calif./SoCal Divers) and Sculti completed the podium with 502.89 points.

Hawkins and Cooper were the lone pair in the men’s synchronized 10-meter preliminary and were named national champions even though they scratched from the final. The posted a mark of 289.77 points in the preliminary.

The 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships crowned 10 national champions at the Greensboro Aquatic Center over the course of seven days. Below are the national champions for each event:

Men’s 1-meter: Briadam Herrera (Miami, Fla./University of Miami)

Women’s 3-meter: Brooke Schultz (Fayetteville, Ark./University of Arkansas)

Men’s 3-meter: Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Indiana University)

Women’s 10-meter: Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas/COM Aquatics)

Men’s 10-meter: Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C./University of Texas)

Women’s synchronized 3-meter: Anne Fowler (Burke, Va./Alexandria Dive Club) & Carolina Sculti (Rye, N.Y./Marlins Diving Club)

Men’s synchronized 3-meter: Grayson Campbell (Vienna, Va./University of Texas) & Greg Duncan (Oakton, Va./University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill)

Women’s synchronized 10-meter: Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Northwestern University) & Sophia McAfee (San Marino, Calif./Trojan Dive Club)

Men’s synchronized 10-meter: Ryan Hawkins (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale Diving Team) & Zach Cooper (Greenwood, Ind./University of Miami)
