Sprint News 6/15/12: Cochrane Out of Running; Brucato to Bellarmine

The CBC is hosting a contest to select Canada’s flagbearer for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In the two-bracket setup, swimmer and 2008 medalist Ryan Cochrane was given a 5-seed, but lost the vote against show jumper Ian Miller. There is still one aquatic athlete still in the running – diver Alex Despatie. Go here to check out the voting

…Former Arkansas All-American Yi Ting Siow won the title at the Southeast Asian Champs on Thursday. She represents Malaysia, and won in 1:10.66 – which clears the Olympic “B” standard and is right at her best time. Other notable winners include Singapore’s Chien Yin Khoo in 1:02.79 – at only 16 years old; Thi Anh Nguyen from Vietnam with a third individual title, this one in the 100 back in 1:02.70 – she’s only 15; and 2008 Olympic finalist Li Tao in the women’s 100 fly in 59.23. …Former Kentucky assistant John Brucato has been hired as the first coach of the new men’s and women’s programs at Bellarmine University in Louisville. Brucato has been the University of Kentucky for 9 seasons and has a total fo 22 years of service in Lexington between their club team and college team. The team will begin in the 2012-2013 season, and is a natural fit – Brucato has a child who just graduated from Bellarmine….

…After crunching the numbers, Georgia Southern has announced that Nathan Kellogg has become the winningest swimming & diving coach in school history. His 74 wins at the end of the 2011-2012 season surpasses 9-year coach Scott Farmer, who has 67. It has taken Kellogg only 8 to surpass that mark…

Cochrane lost to show jumper Ian Millar, not cyclist Ian Miller.
