Watch King Kyle Chalmers’ 100 Free Racing Return At Aussie SC C’ships

2017 AUSTRALIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Making his return to elite competition, 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers hit his home pool tonight during day 1 finals of the 2017 Australian Short Course Championships. The 19-year-old led a trio of Marion Swim teammates who finished atop the podium in the 100m freestyle event, clocking a winning time of 47.72.

Although his national title tonight came well-off his personal best of 46.12, Chalmers no doubt is pumped to be back racing since undergoing heart surgery to address his SVT issue. That procedure rendered him out of the World Championships, but hungry to return to form, gunning for a chance to represent Australia once again, first at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, then onward to Tokyo.

As originally reported:

The men’s 100m freestyle wasn’t quite as speedy record-breaking-wise, but was still a significant race nonetheless. A bearded 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers was back at it after having taken time out to tend to his SVT heart issue, which meant missing the World Championships.

After quietly returning to competition locally this past July, Chalmers claimed the 100m free national title tonight in a solid time of 47.72, although well-off his personal best of 46.12.

Splitting 22.80/24.92, Chalmers led a trio of Marion Swimming Club podium-makers, as teammates Andrew Aboodand Travis Mahoney finished right behind in respective marks of 48.06 and 48.17. Of note, textile world record holder in the event, Cameron McEvoy, and two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist in the event, James Magnussen, are not racing in the meet.

“For perspective, Chalmers’ time tonight would have earned the silver medal behind American Caeleb Dressel in Budapest (47.17), finishing ahead of Nathan Adrian (47.87).”

I see you.

You do realize that Caeleb Dressel and Nathan Adrien’s swims were LCM swims? This meet was SCM. USA swimmers are even faster when you throw walls and underwaters into the equation. ?
