Indiana State To Host Blue VS Gold Meet At Vigo County Aquatic Center

Press Release courtesy of Indiana State Athletics.

The Indiana State Sycamores will start their 2017 season with an intrasquad Blue vs. White meet on Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. inside the Vigo County Aquatic Center.

“This meet will not be a standard event order but will be a modified version of normal collegiate dual meet,” said head coach Matt Leach.

Indiana State finished off the their inaugural 2016 season placing seventh at the Missouri Valley Conference meet in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Sycamores placed two student-athletes, Jacquie Price and Blanca Saez-Illobre, on the MVC Honorable Mention squad following their impressive performances at conference.

During the 2016-2017 season the Sycamores also defeated a few other opponents including Rose-Hulman, Eastern Illinois and a huge 143 to 107 win over the Butler Bulldogs.

This season the Sycamores welcomed nine new athletes to the roster. Seven of these swimmers are freshman while two others are juniors that have transferred from other universities.

These athletes have come from all over to join the Sycamore family including Sweden, Greece, Georgia, Iowa, Missouri and a few from right here in Indiana.

Indiana State will structure this meet to mimic that of a regular competition dual meet, but it will serve as a practice for the Sycamore squad.

“We are excited for this competition to see where we are at as a program. It will be much different than last year as we have a much bigger team and there will be some very highly contested events. As a team and staff we are process driven, so we are going to evaluate each event and stroke and continue to improve in those areas that need attention. All in all, we have been working hard as a program and I know that each team wants to win. The Blue Team is led by Coach Bex while I will led the White Team.”

Coach Leach and assistant coach Bex Freebairn picked their teams last week and have been hyping them up for this opener all week since.

Each team has numerous stand out swimmers for the Sycamores and every athlete will compete in a multitude of events including some that are out of the ordinary for them.

“We are looking for a few surprises out of our freshmen class and also our junior transfers. I am excited to see everyone get up and race,” said Leach.

Following this meet the Sycamores open their official regular season of competition on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. traveling to face off with MVC opponent Illinois State.

The Following day Indiana State will head to Butler to take on the Bulldogs at 12:00 p.m.

The first events for the Sycamores Blue vs. White meet begin at 2:30 p.m. inside the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
