The U.S. Open will kick off on Wednesday, August 2nd, in Long Island. Probably the biggest story that swim fans are expecting is a first look at Ryan Lochte racing since his Rio suspension. Lochte said he’d be back for the LA Invite a couple of weeks ago, but ended up no-showing the meet. You can read more about Lochte’s return here.
Lochte is only entered in two events this week– the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM. Lochte is a former world record holder in the 200 back, but he’s since shifted from backstroke to freestyle and IM, and the 200 IM is his best event.
Other big names on the psych sheets for the U.S. Open include Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones, former short course world record holder Arkady Vyatchanin, Rio Olympian Gunnar Bentz, Rio Olympian Chloe Tutton of Great Britain, Rio Olympian Christopher Reid of South Africa, Rio Olympian Brad Tandy of South Africa, 4×50 free relay world record team member Madison Kennedy, short course world champion Michael Andrew, former world junior record holder Maxime Rooney, 2011 open water world champion Ashley Twichell, and our #1 recruit of 2017 Eva Merrell.
I think this is the last meet for swimmers that are on the bubble like Bayer ,Mick Litherland, Pomajevich, to qualify for the National team.
And I am not crazy about the move toward pay per view or pay for results that is taking over this summer. I know swimming sites need to generate revenue but Flo Swimming’s monthly charge is way to high if you are a parent that just wants to watch their kid swim in one meet or just want to watch one meet. Meet Mobile is a mediocre at best app that also charges for results that last summer were available at no charge by the meet hosts. This is not the way to increase intreast… Read more »
What events are Eva Merrell Swimming? I think she has a great future ahead of her. her technique is amazing.
Based on Meet Mobile, she is swimming the 100 Free, 200 Back, 100 Fly, 100 Back, and 50 Free.
Judging by the instagram pictures and eerie silence about training, Ryan’s gonna go a 54 100 back and 2:03 200 IM
2:03? How do you figure?
I wouldnt be too surprised by a 54 low, but i would hope he would be at least under 2:00 in the IM.
He wasn’t exactly terrible at Master’s nationals in the spring — sweltering heat and sitting around to sign autographs: 1:44 200 IM with zero competition. He only swims slow when he’s in heavy training, so if he’s not training much, as you think, he should break 2:00.
54 would be a decent time (his lifetime best is 53.3 from 2008 OT’s.. super-suited), and a sign that he’s in fairly good shape, so my thought is that if he can go 54 in the back, there’s no way he goes over 2 in the IM.
Here’s why I think he’s gonna go slow:
1) In the lead up to masters nats, he posted a lot of training videos. Doing like, crazy yardage.
2) he was going on training trips to Florida, isnt right now.
3) his shark week ad he had some love handles. Gotta be real.
4) no training posts or anything for forever.
5) I’ve read somewhere he comes to practice maybe a couple of times a week, even though he’s willing to do any set they give him.
I just feel like by scratching the LA invite, he proved the spark isn’t there and that he’s pushing off the top of the line high quality training for… Read more »
That pretty much describes his first couple years at SwimMac, and he still went fast.
I think a mixture of increased age and sub par training at mac compared to when he was at Florida led to slower and slower times from 2014 to 2016.
That meet is the summer taper meet for the foreigners and a warm-up for US swimmers who will go to WUGS and world juniors.
Lochte is of course the story of the meet.
Rooney trains with Dressel. He must have been inspired by his teammate’s accomplishments. Time for him to confirm all the promises he has shown in the junior ranks. It would help a lot the US 4X200 free relay in the future.
In the biggest US young names, there are Cassidy Bayer, Gretchen Walsh, Eva Merrell, Erica Sullivan, Zoe Bartel, Vanessa Pearl, Michael Andrew, Dare Rose, Ella Ristic, Joy Field, Madison Homovich, Allie Raab, Zoe Bartel, Kenisha Liu, Tristen Ulett, Margaret Aroesty or Sam Pomajevich.

Hey bobo someone you should lookout for at this meet is Jewels Harris, going to swim for Auburn this season. Great Fly/Backstroker. Should look at her progress.
Small british squad here as well with some big names like Chloe Tutton, should be cool to watch.
Yeah, I have a feeling we are going to see big things from Rooney!
hopefully so
I am sure he will have a great meet but I highly doubt he is fully rested with WUGs three weeks out. More than likely this is a training meet.
Live streaming available anywhere?
It used to be on the USA swimming website. Hopefully it will be the case again this year.
Haven’t found anything yet. Anyone have a link anywhere?

Thank you!
Odds of Lochte swimming this meet? 1%. I want to say 0 but I learned never to say never with Ryan Lochte.
Metropolitan Swimming is promoting an autograph session with Lochte for its swimmers, so I have a hunch he will be there.
I am glad to be wrong. Looks my forward to see how he does.
hopefully he does because there were people he was supposed to meet at LA Invite that he didnt show up for. But US OPen is a bigger meet so hopefully he will.
He’s definitely coming
