Today’s Highlights
Day 2 at Ponds Forge rendered more encouraging results from swimmers racing their way to British Summer Championship titles. University of Stirling’s Craig Benson, who earned his first-ever sub-minute 100m breaststroke mark yesterday, led the field today in the 50m sprint for 19+. Clocking a time of 27.43, Benson led a 1-2 Stirling punch, with teammate Jamie Graham touching just behind in 27.78.
Cardiff’s Xavier Mohammed took the men’s 19+ 100m backstroke, earning the only sub-55 second mark of the pack. Mohammed touched in 54.53, the 2nd fastest time of his career. In fact, his time tonight would have beaten his outing of 54.93 from the British National Championships where he placed 3rd.
Elizabeth Simmonds of Edinburgh was the women’s 19+ 100m backstroke gold medalist, finishing in 59.72 to represent the only competitor to break the minute barrier. Stockport Metro’s Katie Matts was the 200m breaststroke victor tonight, winning in 2:26.54. Like Mohammed, her time tonight beat the 2:25.51 thrown down in April, which rendered her 4th overall at the British Championships.
In Para Swimming, S6 swimmer Eleanor Robinson won the multi-class 50m butterfly in a time of 35.99 (958 points), notching a mark under the World Championships consideration time.
Bournemouth College’s Alice Tai, S9, took the women’s MC 100m backstroke title in a mark of 1:08.30 (1016 pts) , while S7 Jonathan Fox was the men’s 100m backstroke victor in 1:10.51 (943 points). Andrew Mullen also topped the podium in the 50m butterfly in 36.90 and 780 points.
