2017 U.S. Worlds Trials: Day 5 Final World Champs Rosters

2017 U.S. NATIONALS/WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TRIALS

Team USA will take 24 men and 21 women to Budapest next month for the 2017 World Championships.

While we’re still waiting for the official announcement from USA Swimming (we don’t know for sure if anyone may have declined events), this is what the team should look like.

Remember that the 2nd slot for the stroke 50s goes to the winner of that stroke’s 100, but in cases where that’s same person (most of them), our understanding is that the 2nd slot will go the person on the team with the highest world ranking in the stroke 50.  The 2nd slot in the women’s 1500 goes to the winner of the 800, while the 2nd slot in the men’s 800 goes to whoever has the highest ranking in the 400 or the 1500.

It is a huge plus for the men’s team to have Matt Grevers. He’s such a huge personality & leader for the group.

I’m looking forward to that men’s 200breast final, the amount of people constantly breaking 2:08 is insane

I’d say US women look good for medals in most races – 50/100/200fl will be tough competition and I see 1 medal most likely. Both IMs will be too, with 2 chances of minor medals. 50/100br look like very safe medals, possibly 2 in both. 200br looks a lot tougher and I dont see a USA medal personally – But a minor medal is again a real chance. 100/200 back look like great medal prospects, again in play for gold. 50 will be tough – I’d fancy the Chinese girls, the Aussie Barratt, Medeiros, Davies etc over the US girls. 50-1500 free very like medals, 4 of them almost certain gold.

Congrats to Stanford Men’s coaches Ted Knapp and Jeff Kostoff. This is the first time in many years that TWO CURRENT Stanford swimmers (as opposed to post-grads) have made the US Olympic or Worlds team. Congrats to Sweetser and Devine as well. Let the rebuilding continue!

If Leah smith makes finals in all of her events the. She will be swimming 5500 meters in Budapest. That’s insane

The only questionable final is 200 free. At this distance we definitely have 6 swimmers that will be ahead of her. And she will have 1500 final – 200 semi double. Nevertheless I think she will go for all of them. Why do I think so? Because she is a professional now. And in the situation when in no way she gets gold medal at any of her races but 4×200 relay it will be more important for that business to make 6 finals and win some medals in some of them. It will be a great feat. Plus if she makes under 4min on Day 1she will get the same attention as Sjostrom and Ledecky.

Startling – I remember Hannah Miley swimming 4000+ at Commonwealths, with the luxury of a few slower heats once. Think it was 400/800fr, 200/400im, 200br, 200fl, 4x200fr off the top of my head. Blew my mind.

So 5000+ is just sickening ???

She looks so fresh, young and happy at her 18. One year completely dedicated to Olympic Games, one year of first independent life in college and we have a different mature looking and behaving person.

Two swimmers cover 8 places from 200 through 1500. It isn’t an indicator of well developed world class competition among American freestylers.

You should be grateful that Katie Ledecky has remained healthy unlike Missy Franklin.

After the 2012 London Olympics, Missy Franklin was suppose to be face of USA Swimming especially with the “Phelps retirement”.

@BAKER-KING-VOLLMER-MANUEL:
I don’t know who made such supposition about Franklin. In 2012 she set incredible world record at 200BK. She easily fit all American successful relays. And that was it.
At the same time another American girl at age 15 set similar by magnitude world record showing overwhelming dominance (4sec over silver medalist) at 800free. Next year (The most successful of Franklin) Ledecky was the best swimmer of World Championships in Barcelona.
But my original point was made about something completely different.
Yes, Ledecky is super talent who is world level compatible from 100 up and who is dominant in current competition from 200 through 1500. But if another swimmer who is 3sec slower at 200,… Read more »

Oh really?

Missy Franklin swam the following events at the 2012 London Olympics:

100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 4 x 100 free relay, 4 x 200 free relay, 4 x 100 medley relay

Note the participation in the 200 free at the 2012 London Olympics. Note the contributions of the women on the 4 x 200 free relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics:

Final
Allison Schmitt – retired, Maya DiRado – retired

Heats
Allison Schmitt – retired, Missy Franklin – double shoulder surgery

Furthermore, Dana Vollmer swam the 4 x 200 free relay at the 2012 London Olympics and Dana Vollmer is currently on maternity leave.

Concern yourself with bigger issues. When was the last time the USA won a medal in the women’s 200 meter butterfly at the Summer Olympic Games?
