2017 Santa Clara PSS: Day 1 Finals Live Recap

2017 Arena Pro Swim Series – Santa Clara

The 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara kicks off tonight at the George F. Haines Aquatic Center in Santa Clara, California. Tonight, swimmers have gathered to compete in the non-Olympic distance freestyle events. The women will be racing in the 1500 meter free, while the men battle in the 800 meter free. Read on for live updates of tonight’s action.

WOMEN’S 1500 FREE:

  1. Katie Ledecky– 15:35.65
  2. Kristel Kobrich– 16:12.89
  3. Mackenzie Padington– 16:31.33

As expected, Stanford’s Katie Ledecky was in a league of her own in this event. In her first 1500 free since breaking the World Record in Kazan, Ledecky charged to a world-leading 15:35.65 to finish 50-meters ahead of anyone else. Ledecky is now the fastest woman in the world by nearly 30 seconds, as Hungarian Boglarka Kapas sits 2nd in 16:04.19. Chilean distance standout Kristel Kobrich swam her way to silver in 16:12, making her the 5th fastest swimmer in the world this year.

MEN’S 800 FREE:

  1. Matias Koski– 8:00.29
  2. Marcelo Acosta– 8:01.28
  3. True Sweetser– 8:01.44

The fastest heat of the 800 free saw 3 men battling closely down the stretch. Marcelo Acosta held the lead with 200 to go, but True Sweetser and Matias Koski started to make their moves. At the 700-meter mark, all 3 swimmers were bunched in the 7:03-range, racing to see who had the most left in the tank on the last 100. Koski, who led by half a second at the 700, took off with a 57.00 on the last 100, winning the race in 8:00.29. Sweetser fell just short of silver, as Acosta held him off in 8:01.28 to Sweetser’s 8:01.44.

She’s horribly out of shape. She needs to put a lot work in if she even wants to make the team this summer.

Yes, 1.3 sec per hundred off the WR per 100 untapered. Definitely way off base…
