Day 3 of the Maria Lenk Trophy saw lots of shuffling in Brazil’s top-8 FINA point rankings, though there was only one newcomer in the list.
Marcelo Chierighini had the top prelim time in the men’s 100 free at 48.46, scoring 907 FINA points and moving him into a potential spot on the World Championship roster. In the final, Gabriel Santos reclaimed the top Brazilian time of the season in 48.11, improving from 7th to 2nd on the list with 927 points.
Also improving his ranking during the finals session was Leonardo De Deus, who clocked a personal best 1:54.91 to win the 200 fly and move up from 8th to 5th on the rankings with 913 points.
Once finals were done with Chierighini sat 6th on the rankings. Currently tied for 8th is Guilherme Guido (100 BK) and Brandonn Almeida (400 IM) with 900 points, but Almeida has the opportunity to improve his time with the 400 IM still to come at the Maria Lenk. His 400 IM and Thiago Simon‘s 200 breast are the only two remaining swims in the top-8 done at the Brazil Open in November.

The top female ranked swims are from Joanna Maranhao (400 free, 11th) and Manuella Lyrio (200 free, 12th). The CBDA can add swimmers beyond the top-8 FINA ranked at their discretion.
The same system is in place for the Junior World Championships, where the top-8 swimmers based on FINA points are automatically named to the team.
Day 3 saw Lucas Peixoto moved into the #3 position with a 50.02 100 free that scored 825 points. Breno Correia and Matheus Gonche also improved their times in the 100 free and 200 fly. Check out the list below:

Steady improvement from Gabriel Santos, who I remind watching at Junior Worlds 2015 racing Chalmers, Rooney, Miressi, Spajari.
After Mateus De Santana’s regression (in late 2014, early 2015 his growth seemed unstoppable), perhaps a very promising young Brazilian sprinter.

Old man Nicholas Santos just rocketed to tie world 1 with a 22,80 50 fly.. Martins first sub-23 textile with 22,98.. Cielo will need to step up a lot at night if he wants to have an individual swim..

Looks like they have a decent 4×100 frre relay team and medley relay too.

Free relay: Gabriel, Fratus, Chiereghinni and Cielo.. too bad Nicolas and de Lucca opted out this year.. but for next years some guys (Who I hope don´t flop) coming who will go to Jr Worlds.
Medley relay:Guido (Weakest leg right now with 53,7 but he had gone 53 flat already so..) Henrique 51,5 Lima or Joao Gomes 59 low and Gabriel with a 48,1 now..
Good team, I wuoldn’t surprise by a medal in Budapest (but attention to the russian)
Considering the current weakness of the French team the free relay is pretty open, but they always step up.. Australia and US seems a bit ahead (Unless Held and others flop this year without Phelps.. Will Ervin try to swim the 100?), Brazil seem safe, but we don´t know for sure who Russia will take (Top 4 are Morozov, Izotov, Arbuzov and Korolov) but they make pick Lagunov, Lobintsev, Grechin? Who knows?
On medley GBR is far ahead of the rest of world right now, they and US will battle for gold now that Phelps is out, Shields is not so better than Guy and Scott found new speed.. China seems favorite for 3rd place.. but BRA RUS and JPN… Read more »
They still lack a backstroker even close to Murphy, Adrian is still the best anchor in the world and Shields best flat start is still better than Guy’s best relay split. The only advantage they have over the US is Peaty
I wouldn’t be so quick to rule out China being up there for the win. In general for them it comes down to whether Ning Zetao is put in the worlds squad even though he didn’t swim their trials, and if he does what form is he on. He was a completely different swimmer at Rio compared to Kazan. Also with the current state of the backstroke leg for GB with CWH going backwards I think the US is fairly safe there.
For the 4×100 free I’d still say the Americans are the favourites by a long shot. Phelps might be gone and who knows what Ervin’s 100 will be like, but with Adrian, Dressel and Held as the front… Read more »
Still at least one second behind every backstroker in every major swimming power. Also their fly isn’t that competitive
51,5 is competitive at least for a medley level.. No country with a somewhat good medley relay right now has a sub-51 flat start flyer.. On the back I said that was the weak link..
Why is the headline about a swimmer going 48.4 when another swimmer in the final goes 48.1?
Same question the guy goes 48,11 and no headline is about him
Santos was already in position to go to Worlds with his 48.6 from November.
