China’s Li Zhuhao shaved four tenths of a second off of his own junior world record this week, going 1:55.09 in the 200 fly.
Li just turned 18 years old in January, meaning he’s eligible to break junior world records for the rest of this calendar year. He previously broke the record last year. Most recently, the record stood at 1:55.52, a time Li put up at the Chinese Championships last August.
Li’s lowering of the record on Thursday proved important two days later, when Japan’s Nao Horomura went 1:55.37. That would have broken the record had Li not lowered it earlier in the week. The two may not face off directly, as Horomura was third at Japan’s national championships and only the top two will likely swim at Worlds. Those two Japanese teammates also sit first and second in the world this season. But Li and Horomura are shaping up to be long-term rivals: both were born in January of 1999 and could battle at the Asian Games in 2018.
Li won the Chinese national title and now sits #4 in the world ranks for this season:

Didn’t Phelps go 1:54.58 in 2001 World Championship when he was 16? How can this be the junior world record?
They only count times from a certain year onward (cant remember which year) so all of michael phelps records dont technically count as the WJR
