- Psych Sheet
The psych sheets for the upcoming Canadian World Championship Trials have been released, with many notable swimmers missing.
The most significant is Santo Condorelli, who gained his Canadian Sporting Citizenship in 2015 before representing Canada at the 2015 Pan Ams, 2015 Worlds, and the 2016 Olympic Games. Condorelli’s best event has been the 100 freestyle, where he finished 2nd at the Pan Ams before back-to-back 4th place finishes in Kazan and Rio.
After taking a redshirt year in 2015-16, Condorelli has been back training and going to school at USC since September. He recently competed at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, earning All-American honors in four different events.
Another surprising name absent from the psych sheet is Emily Overholt, who earned bronze in the 400 IM at the 2015 World Championships before taking 5th at the Olympics last summer.
Along with those two, eight other members of Canada’s Olympic team are missing:
- Ashton Baumann
- Jason Block
- Ryan Cochrane (officially retired)
- Evan van Moerkerke
- Audrey Lacroix
- Brittany Maclean (officially retired)
- Martha McCabe
- Noemie Thomas
As for swimmers actually competing, last summer’s Canadian star Penny Oleksiak is entered in five events, including the two she medaled in individually in Rio, the 100 free and 100 fly. She will also partake in the 50 free, 200 free and 50 fly.
Other notable females include Olympic medalists Chantal van Landeghem, Sandrine Mainville, Michelle Toro (formerly Williams), Kylie Masse, Taylor Ruck, Katerine Savard and Kennedy Goss.
The men’s side is led by Yuri Kisil and Markus Thormeyer, who both lit up the pool at the U Sport Championships in February. After getting the Canadian 400 free relay to the final the last two years in Kazan and Rio, they’ll be in tough to do so again without Condorelli and van Moerkerke. Both have been on great form and should qualify in multiple events. The only other male Olympians competing will be Javier Acevedo and Mack Darragh.
Check out the psych sheets here.
Evan is retired
Could he be switching back to compete for USA?
Funny because now it seems Usa has enough solid sprinters of the rise ……
Rumour has it santo may be switching sporting citizenship to Italy.
Giving the finger to the crowd might go over better in Italy.
Is santo quitting?
Didn’t he have cracked ribs at NCAAs?
Women’s free relays look stellar. They’d even have a half decent “B” relay in budapest if they could enter one. Going to be difficult for the men to qualify 4×100 free relay and medley relay without Santo, Block and Van Moerkerke.
There would be more swimmers in attendance if they didn’t make the national university meet SCM and host trials a few weeks later, giving uni students no time to get LCM cuts.
None of those people listed here would be short a LCM standard. The qualifying period includes all of last season.
Lots of people missing, goes to show that John Atkinson is scaring people away
Maybe if you cared more about swimming instead of smoking cigarettes and modeling he do better
Chillll dude, don’t act like you have a handle on his life choices. Nobody said he wanted/had to compete internationally.
Long time no see, Yoomin.
It’s just sad to see someone with so much talent throwing it away
Lots of international stars are skipping this summer WC, just look and see how many Aussies are skipping. Some choose to focus on 2018. Not what I would have done, but I am never swam at that level.
Maybe you should stop judging people by their Instagram account. They’re meant to be fun. He’s a world class swimmer, full time economics major, and a part-time model. I think he’s balancing all of this quite well. And holding a cigarette for a modeling picture is not smoking….it’s a picture.
