After a well deserved rest, the Olympic champions in women’s water polo are back in action. Following an unprecedented second straight Olympic gold medal, the USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team returns to competition this May 2-7 in the FINA Intercontinental Tournament held at UC-Davis’ Schaal Aquatic Center. The number one ranked team in the world will kick-off their 2017 schedule by welcoming the likes of Australia, Canada, China, Japan and Kazakhstan to the Central Valley.
As two-time defending gold medalists in this event, Team USA will bring a very different team to Davis than the one that claimed gold in Rio De Janeiro last August. With this event taking place during the end of the women’s collegiate season the Team USA roster will feature a mixture of veterans and rising talents from the Team USA pipeline.
“It has been a long time since Rio and we are thrilled to be back at it. Since most of our athletes are playing collegiately, the timing provides a unique opportunity for some of our young athletes to compete at the senior level and for our coaching staff to get a brief stint working with them,” said Team USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian. He continued, “we always take a lot of pride in being able to host events. With that in mind we are thrilled to be able to compete at UC Davis, a university and and community that has been so supportive of our sport.”
The top four teams at this event qualify for the FINA World League Super Final held in Shanghai, China this June. It all leads up the 2017 FINA World Championships, the premier event of the year, held this July in Budapest, Hungary.
Full team rosters, ticket information and live streaming details will be available in the coming weeks for the FINA Intercontinental Tournament. A tentative game schedule has been released and is available below.
