Psych sheets are out for the 2017 Pac-12 men’s swimming & diving championships that begin on Wednesday with a relay-only timed finals session.
Like most conferences, coaches are allowed to over-enter athletes and then scratch them down, so many event entries are still veiled in secrecy.
The biggest news is that Cal was unable to get approval for Quah Zheng to swim this season. Zheng, a Singapore Olympian, arrived on campus mid-season, but was unable to get approval from the NCAA to compete right away.
In earnest, though, we’ve listed the potential lineups of some of the biggest-name swimmers below.
- Defending NCAA backstroke champion Ryan Murphy is pre-entered in 6 events – the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. He swam the 200 IM, 100 back, and 200 back at NCAAs last season.
- Andrew Seliskar is entered in the 200 free, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM. Those are the only 5 races he’s swum this season.
- Grant Shoults is entered in the 200, 500, and 1650 free, with a curveball entry in the 200 fly as an alternative to the mile on the final day. He actually swam both on the final day of the team’s mid-season invite at Texas.
- USC sophomore Carsten Vissering, the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, will also swim the 200 breaststroke and 50 free at the meet.
His last name is Quah, first name Zheng Wen.
I have to wonder what Ryan Murphy could do in a 200 free. The guy has been 1:35 BACKSTROKE – you’d think he could swim at least 4 seconds faster in freestyle.
Some of the PAC12 records are incorrect
Any idea why Nick Norman is exhibition? Injured?
No “AUKAI Lileikis either?? What happened to him?
Injured I believe. I think nothing too bad since he’s swum unattached at a club meet this semester, but maybe they’re trying to swing a redshirt.
4×200 free relay potential loss
Eh. I bet with Seliskar Gutierrez Jensen and some other fourth (maybe Josa or Coan) they’ll still have four 1:33s or better. Not gonna win NCs but maybe PAC 12s and a top 3-5 at NCs
I wish all the top swimmers (conger, schooling, Dressel, Held, Murphy) agreed to all swim the same event where no one has a big advantage (perhaps the 200IM or 200free or 100IM)
200 IM Murphy is the best by a long shot. Nobody has a backstroke like him, and you can fake that first 50 fly a lot easier.
200 Free Conger would probably run away with it. His breast is said to be awful though.
100 IM? That would be fun.
Dressel would win a 100 IM. Conger 200 free and Murphy 200 IM
I wouldn’t be so quick to write off Dressel in the 200 free. He swam a 1:33 a day or two after the last championship. I’d be willing to bet he could put up a faster time rested, shaved, and focused on it.
Yeh but Conger’s got a 1:31 low in him and has already been 1:31.8
I think Schooling would win a 100 IM
Dressel would throw down a nasty IM – throw in Chadwick too.
Dressel and schooling could certainly give Murphy a run in the 200im
Murphy will break Nolan’s AR in the 2 IM this year.
that to fast of a record
I’m want to see what Murphy can do in the freestyles when tapered. He was no slouch in high school; it would be interesting to see how much he has improved since then.
Yeah they should let him lead off some relays if they’re not trying to get anyone else NCAA times.
He won’t be tapered
Whoah he would have made a huge difference can you imagine having as many as 6 backstrokers in a final?
Ask Eddie Reese what that is like. They had 6 2 years ago in the 1 fly
