The Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (WISCA) has released its latest polls for the boys high school swim season, and Waukesha South-Catholic Memorial continues to hold a strong lead in Division 1. Though Waukesha South-Catholic Memorial remains the team to beat, Madison West High School has overtaken Madison Memorial by a narrow two-point lead for the second position in the polls. Last year’s Division 1 state champion was Madison Memorial, with the 2016 victory coming as the school’s 5th-consecutive state title and 15th state title overall.
Last year Madison Memorial graduated two individual stars (Ben Gebhart, 2-time 100 fly state champ, and Justin Temprano, 3-time 100 back state champ), losses that have also had a profound effect on their relays. Nonetheless, Madison Memorial will contend for a top-3 finish in the Division 1 championship. On the Division 2 side, Monona Grove holds a commanding lead over 2nd-place Ashwaubenon, leading 619 to 432 points, respectively. Monona Grove will return 4-time individual state champ and junior Ben McDade, who has doubled up to win both the 200 and 500 freestyles each of the past two years, setting the state record in the 500 with a 4:30.12 last year. Eric Storms, also of Monona Grove, enters the meet ranked 1st in Division 2 in the 100 back, an event he won last year by over a second.
The Division 2 state championships will take place Friday, February 17th, while the Division 1 state championships will take place Saturday, February 18th. Both meets will be held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison’s natatorium.
