2016 Short Course World Championships: Day 6 Finals Preview

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimmers are gearing up for day 6 finals of the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Canada, which marks the final session of the meet. Tonight, we’ll crown the world champions in the women’s 200 free relay, 200 breast, 100 fly, 50 free, and 400 medley relay, as well as the men’s 1500 free, 100 free, 200 back, 50 breast, and 400 medley relay. Read on for a preview of some of the top races to watch.

RANOMI KROMOWIDJOJO DEFENDS 50 FREE TITLE

The Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo will be defending her world title in tonight’s 50 free final. She’s the currently the World Record holder in this race, having set the mark at 23.24 back in 2013. A couple of years later in 2015, she tied her own World Record again. Headed into semis, only Kromowidjojo and Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen have sub-24 times and look to be the favorites for gold and silver.

BLAKE PIERONI HEADLINES MEN’S 100 FREE FIELD

Team USA’s Blake Pieroni, who won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the prelims 400 free relay in Rio, is the top seed for tonight’s 100 free final. The entire top 8 is separated by just 4 tenths, so tonight’s race could be a close one. Racing on either side of him will be Lithuania’s Simonas Bilis and Japan’s Shinri Shioura. Olympic medalist Park Tae Hwan (KOR) will also be in the mix. Park will look to add another gold after winning the 200 free and 400 free at this meet, but he’ll have another event right before this one.

GREGORIO PALTRINIERI, PARK TAE HWAN TO BATTLE IN 1500 FREE

Immediately before he lines up for the 100 free, Park Tae Hwan is slated to compete in the men’s 1500 free final. He’ll be going up against reigning Olympic champ Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA), who owns the World Record and Championship Record in this race. NCAA swimmers Anton Ipsen (DEN), an NC State junior, and True Sweetser (USA), a Stanford freshman, will be in the hunt for a medal.

KELSI WORRELL CHASES 100 FLY GOLD

After taking silver in the 50 fly and 200 fly, Team USA’s Kelsi Worrell will have one last shot at gold in tonight’s 100 fly final. She’s the top seed heading into the race, but just by a nail over Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who will be racing for her 7th gold of the meet. Japanese junior standout Rikako Ikee will be in the mix, and we could see her break her own Junior World Record of 56.42 from the World Cup in October.

I think the US needs Worrell to win the 200 free relay but I don’t know if will impact her 100fly race.

Geez. How would you like to go a 100 free and turnaround and do a 1500? Good luck with that one, Park.

What about Henrik Christiansen in the 1500?

This isn’t a comprehensive list of swimmers or events. Just a quick preview of a few things/swimmers to watch for. Everything will be covered in the recap.

Are the rumors true about Ipsen potentially transferring to UNC? Wouldn’t make much sense with how well he’s done at NC state. Maybe he’s looking to join the momentum that their men’s team has had this year. Still, with only 1 year of eligibility left it wouldn’t make much sense…

Got to hand it to Ranomi .For an Olympic gold medallist sprinter she is a no drama lady who did not freak out when beaten or suffering an unfortunate illness.at any time since London . Other f swimmes could watch & learn .

Agree. She’s terrific. Ridiculously dominant off the start, too.

Look for a breakout swim from pepperoni. 4 tenths separating the field?! Only the sneakiest swimmers will sneak onto that podium. I believe pepperoni has a shot to surprise some folks watching from home. Not me though, he’s always been so sneaky
