Just minutes after splitting 24.44 on the World Record breaking American 4×50 medley relay, Kelsi Worrell was back in the pool for the women’s 200 fly final. She was coming in as the top seed after going 2:03.94 in the morning, when she became the 3rd fastest American in history. She bettered that time tonight by over a second, clocking 2:02.89 for the silver medal and a new American Record.
Worrell and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu were very close for most of the race, with Hosszu making her move on the third 50 and ultimately holding on for the win in 2:02.15. Worrell was more than two seconds clear of bronze medal winner Zhang Yufei of China.
Worrell moves past Cammile Adams and Kathleen Hersey as the fastest American ever. Adams was the previous record holder at 2:03.39 set at the Duel In the Pool one year ago in Indianapolis. Hersey’s best came from the same meet in 2011, when the Duel was held in Atlanta.
Worrell will swim the 50 and 100 fly events later in the week, and will continue to be a fixture on the American relays.
