Szaranek, Plaschka Break 100 Fly National Records In Prelims

After breaking the Scottish 200 IM record yesterday morning, Mark Szaranek did it again this morning in the 100 fly. He posted a time of 51.35 in heat 1, breaking the old record of 51.72 set by Todd Cooper back in 2008. He finished 13th overall, safely advancing to the semi-finals tonight.

That wasn’t the only national record broken in the 100 fly this morning, as Jamaica’s Justin Plaschka broke that record in 52.31. Plaschka is the long course record holder at 55.42, but the previous short course record was only 56.37 by Nico Campbell two years ago in Doha. Plaschka, who swims for Notre Dame in the US, blew by that time this morning by over four seconds. He missed the semis in 22nd place.

Maria Ugolkova broke her own Swiss Record in the 100 free, clocking 53.97 to take out her old record of 54.84 from the 2015 European Championships. She missed the semis by two tenths in 19th.

Argentina’s Delfina Pignatiello also broke the national record in the 800 free, going 8:25.05 for 6th overall and advances to tomorrow’s final, despite not swimming in the circle seeded heats. That swim takes out Cecilia Biagioli‘s mark of 8:29.13 from 2009.
