Last night Taylor Ruck made a statement to pick up Canada’s first medal of these home championships with a third place finish in the 200m freestyle.
The teenage Canadian rising star managed to post a time of 1:52.50 in the short course pool, shattering not only the previous Canadian record in the race, but setting the first world junior record in the event.
Her time broke the FINA imposed standard of 1:53.07 and the former Canadian record of 1:54.23 set by Genevieve Saumur back in 2009.
Her time of 1:52.50 finished behind both Federica Pellegrini and Hungarian all-around all-star Katinka Hosszu. Pellegrini managed to clock in at 1:51.73 for the win with Hosszu just behind in 1:52.28.
Ruck’s swim bodes will for the Canadian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay that will compete on December 10th. Coming off a bronze from the 2016 Olympic Games, the Canadians are in the hunt for a medal here in Windsor.
Ruck will likely be paired with the newly minted Canadian swimming icon Penny Oleksiak, as they look to add another medal to Canada’s stash at these short course worlds.
