Due to budget cuts, Brazil has been forced to change the 2017 World and World Junior Championships team selection criteria.
The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA) held a meeting on November 21 to determine the new team selection criteria for the 2017 FINA World Championships. With recent major budget cuts in mind, the board decided that the athletes will be considered for the team if they obtain qualification times in individual events or relays at the following competitions:
- XXV Brazilian Senior Championship – Trophy Daltely Guimarães and XI Tournament Open – Palhoça / SC – 23 the November 26, 2016
- LVII Brazilian Swimming Championship – Maria Lenk Trophy – April 24-29, 2017 – Rio de Janeiro / RJ
Given these criteria, the top eight swimmers of the men’s and women’s meets combined (8 total swimmers, not 16) based on a points system will be sent to next summer’s World Championships in Budapest.
The criteria and selection process for the World Junior Championships team are similar– swimmers will be considered for the team if they obtain qualification times in individual events or relays at the following competitions:
- XXV Brazilian Senior Championship – Trophy Daltely Guimarães and XI Tournament Open – Palhoça / SC – 23 the November 26, 2016
- LVII Brazilian Swimming Championship – Maria Lenk Trophy – 24 the April 29, 2017 – Rio de Janeiro / RJ
It was also decided that for both the World and World Junior Championships a Coaching Staff composed of three people will be decided upon after the teams are selected.
