Miami Ohio has picked up a new backstroker, as Lakeside Swim Team’s Colleen McDermott has just announced her verbal commitment to join the RedHawks next fall. McDermott, a native of Kentucky, is primarily a backstroker, but she also shows promise in the sprint free races. She’ll be making the move to campus after she graduates from Sacred Heart Academy at the end of this school year.
“I’m thrilled to share my verbal commitment to swim for Miami University! I can’t wait to spend my next four years under such a great program. Go RedHawks!”
Last season, McDermott was a finalist at the 2016 Kentucky Girls State Championships, where she finished 6th in the 100 back. She was also a medalist at the Kentucky Region 5 Championships, swimming to 3rd in the 100 back.
McDermott’s Top Times:
- 100 back- 56.85
- 200 back- 2:02.16
- 50 free- 25.03
- 100 free- 53.31
- 200 IM- 2:12.07
When she arrives at Miami, McDermott should have an immediate impact for the team at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Her best time of 2:02.16 is already fast enough to have scored in the B-final at 2016 MACs. Additionally, her personal best 56.85 in the 100 back is just 2 tenths shy of what it took to score.
