Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling made history in Rio by claiming his nation’s first Olympic swimming gold medal, topping the podium in the men’s 100m butterfly event. His groundbreaking performance is helping to stir up additional head-turning Singaporean swimming performances, as teammates continue to rewrite the record books post-Rio.
While competing at the FINA World Cup stop at the OCBC Aquatic Center in Singapore of the weekend, home swimmer Lionel Khoo claimed two national records in his specialty stroke. He first broke his own 100m breaststroke national record, touching in 1:00.46 to claim 8th in the event. That surpassed his previous record of 1:00.66 he notched at the National Age Group Swimming Championships earlier this year.
Also at the World Cup, Khoo lowered his own 200m breaststroke national record as well. He stopped the clock at 2:11.08 to claim 5th, overtaking his previous national record of 2:12.47 from last December’s national championships.
Khoo owns all 3 national records across all 3 short course meters versions of the breaststroke events and also holds Singapore’s records in the 100m/200m in long course.
The World Cup series continues with the last two stops taking place in Tokyo and Hong Kong on October 25-26th and October 29th-30th, respectively.
