This weekend was the official opening of the new Cal Legends Aquatics Center.
The new $15 million outdoor swimming arena will alleviate the strain on the existing Spieker Aquatics Center pool on Cal’s campus that was packed to its brim by use from the swimming, diving, and water polo teams – leaving scheduling inflexibility and nightmares both with practices and with student athletes’ academic loads.
The facility also includes new locker rooms and a 500-seat grandstand. The pool is exclusive for student-athlete use, and puts Cal into elite company of schools with multiple 50 meter pools on campus. Most importantly, it gives Cal a full compliment of diving towers so that Cal athletes no longer have to travel across the bay to rivals Stanford’s pool to train.
The Cal men dove in on Friday afternoon for the first official practice in the new pool, and the school held an official opening ceremony weekend as well. Videos of those events are below:
The Cal men’s swim team has won 3 of the last 6 NCAA Championships, the women have won 4 of 8, and the Cal men’s water polo team has won 13 national championships.
