Brunswick, Maine’s Caitlin Tycz has made a verbal commitment to the University of Southern California for 2017-18. Tycz is the #14 swimmer on our list of top 20 girls from the class of 2017, and the third top-20 after #3 Maggie Aroesty and #13 Marta Ciesla) to choose to make Los Angeles their home for the next four years.

Tycz swims for Long Reach Swim Club year-round and is the reigning YMCA national record-holder in the 100 yard butterfly, having won the event at YMCA Short Course Nationals with 52.43. She was sixth in the 200 fly at that meet. An Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100m fly, she placed second in the 100 and seventh in the 200 at the YMCA Long Course Nationals this summer.
Swimming for Brunswick High School at the 2016 Maine High School Girls Class A State Swimming and Diving Championships, Tycz went 4-for-4 with two state records, leading her team to the team title. She won the 200 IM (2:06.23) and 100 fly (53.32, state and meet record), and anchored the winning 200 free relay (23.48) and 400 free relay (51.06, team broke state and meet record). Her top SCY times are:
- 100 fly – 52.43
- 200 fly – 1:58.00
- 50 free – 23.61
- 100 free – 51.76
- 200 free – 1:50.37
With the loss of Kendyl Stewart and Lucy Worrell to graduation in 2016, and without a ton of depth in butterfly, the Trojans are filling a hole with Tycz’s commitment. Current junior Hannah Weiss was the next-highest scorer at 2016 Pac-12s and SoCal flier Catherine Sanchez joined the roster this fall but Tycz is a half-second faster than the former and 1.4 seconds faster than the latter in the 100. Already A-final-ready in the 100 fly at the conference level, Tycz will have a big role to play in the 100 and on relays; and while her 200 fly would have scored in the B final at Pac-12s, she needs to keep developing her third event.
