Mykenzie Leehy of Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa has verbally committed to the University of Houston and will begin in the fall of 2017.
“Houston had everything for me. Great facilities, support groups and a winning attitude made this an easy commit for me. The excitement of where the University is going both academically and athletically is contagious and I want to be part of it. I can’t wait to swim for Coach Ryan Wochomurka and Assistant Coach Hannah Burandt. GO COOGS!!!”
Leehy’s best short course times come from her sophomore year. She broke the Iowa high school state record in the 100y freestyle at the 2014 IGHSAU State Swimming and Diving Championships going 50.40, and placed fourth in the 50 free with a personal-best 23.44. As a freshman she was a member of Lewis Central’s record-breaking 400 free relay.
Leehy also swims for Council Bluffs Swim Club, with whom she notched several personal bests this year. In addition to the PBs she earned in the 100/200 back and 100 fly in short course season, Leehy lowered her LCM times in the 50/200/400 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM this summer. Her top events include:
SCY | LCM | |
50 free | 23.44 | 26.96 |
100 free | 50.40 | 58.17 |
200 free | 1:51.00 | 2:07.05 |
Leehy’s best 50y free time would rank seventh on the Cougars’ all-time list, while her 100 free would be second. She would have scored in the top 8 of the women’s 100 free at the 2016 AAC Championships, and in the B finals of the 50 and 200 freestyle events.
