Texas Men Will Swim 5 of Country’s Top 10 Teams in 2016-2017 Duals

The Texas Longhorns men’s swimming & diving teams are the defending NCAA Division I Champions, and they’ve put together a schedule for the 2016-2017 season that’s worthy of upholding that honor.

The Longhorns will swim duals or tris against 5 of the country’s top 10 teams from last season, plus perennial powers the Arizona Wildcats, who had a down year last year.

Texas’ dual meet schedule, with last year’s NCAA rank:

  • #9 Indiana/#3 Florida – October 21st-22nd, INDIANA HOST
  • #4 NC State – November 4th, HOME
  • #10 Auburn – January 12th, AUBURN HOST
  • #5 Georgia – January 14th, GEORGIA HOST
  • #16 Arizona – January 27th-28th, HOME
  • NR TCU – February 3rd, TCU HOST

It’s a relatively light schedule compared to what we’ve seen from most of the top teams in the country this season, with none of the smaller-scale invites that have begun to clog up the college regular-season schedule, but those meets on the list will count.

Texas will also play host to two invites that historically drawn in big competition.

  • The Texas Invite, which extends to four days to match the NCAA Championship schedule, is from November 30th-December 3rd;
  • and the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin – a USA Swimming hosted meet that this year will kick off the series as a result of no more Minneapolis meet in the fall.

All of this is in preparation for attempting to repeat as NCAA Champions (they’ll be the favorites) from March 22nd-25th in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Longhorns return Olympic medalists Townley Haas, Jack Conger, and Joseph Schooling, who combined for 128 individual points and 4 NCAA titles last season; plus 2016 U.S. Olympic medalist Clark Smith, who’ll be looking to springboard from a successful off-season to improve upon his 5-point NCAA performance last year, and defending NCAA Champion Will Licon.

1 quick fix to the article Braden:
Texas will actually be facing 6 of the top 10 teams from last year.
At the Orange-White meet they face a title contending team called “the Texas B guys”

The article says the Texas Invite is in mid-November, but the schedule says that’s when the dive meet is, and the Texas Invite for swimming is 11/30-12/3. Which is correct?

It looks to me like Braden just may have misread the 2 separate Texas Invite entries on the calendar. Presumably the swim meet is in its usual timeframe (11/30-12/3) for a barrage of NCAA cuts.

Horns return:

4 NCAA individual champs- Licon, Smith, Haas, Schooling
7 US Olympic Trials Finalists- Conger, Haas, Smith, Roberts, Licon, Shebat, Glass
4 Gold Medals- Schooling, Haas, Conger and Smith
17 Swimmers who’ve previously qualified for NCAA’s

It’s pretty special collection of talent.
