The Florida State Seminoles have added a second coach to their revamped coaching staff under new head coach Neal Studd.
“I’d like to thank (former head coach) Pete Lindsay for allowing me to be part of the last years of his career as coach for Miami (OH) University.” Carrington said of his time at Miami. “Pete helped me discover more of the pieces to my puzzle for coaching. His mentoring and friendship are invaluable to my development.”
Carrington has spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with Miami University in Ohio, and also has four years at Duke on his resume.
The Miami programs will combine genders next season under Hollie Bonewit-Cron, but Carrington had worked with the men’s program over the last two seasons. Last year, the program finished 5th of 7 teams at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Carrington also has head coaching experience on his resume – from 2009-2011 he led the program at Division III Southwestern University in Texas, which included coaching the program’s first ever swimming All-American.
Earlier today, SwimSwam reported that Florida State has also hired Ozzie Quevedo, who will serve as the new head assistant coach for the Seminoles.
This is the issue with college swimming. Successful coaches will have opportunities to leave. It doesn’t matter the sport. It’s not always about the money. You have to keep in mind no one paid any attention to Studd until he had a few great seasons for a small school, and then Arkansas comes calling. He granted them an interview, he reported back to FGCU and FGCU stepped up their package, which will benefit the new coach, but why live in Arkansas, work indoors, and try and recruit people to Fayetteville, when you could stay in your state, attract some of the best talent in the country, and spread scholarship money around where it could benefit everyone?

But the response after turning down Arkansas was it was not about the money AND his wife was happy in SW Fl….in addition, the timing could not have been worse for the current FGCU athletes, still no decision on who the next coach is going to be. Yes, that’s collegiate athletics, and a life lesson for all.
It’s criminal they didn’t hire any alumni. Many good young choices in the club scene that deserve the opportunity and are very successful. They could have pulled Andy Hogdson away from his recent hire at Va Tech, or Ian Rowe at NCAP, Nick Graves at Dynamo, or Scott Thacker at SMAC. I guess other universities will benefit from these noles talents.
Criminal? How did hiring alumni (they had two on staff last season) work out for them in the last go around??
Then again – it’s not like hiring Auburn defections worked either….
This is the textbook late head coaching hire leads to bizarre assistant coaching hires, wasn’t Dan just named to the new staff at Miami? Seems pretty flakey to accept one position and turn around to take another a few weeks (days?) later. Granted FSU is a big step up in name; what results does he have that merit this kind of move? But of course look at his new boss, flirted with the “big boys” twice this summer and after squeezing a BIG raise out of his first tryst he leaves his former program high and dry after his second.

I think (assume) Just Sayin means that he accepted a new position at Miami by joining the new staff.
Tasteless and absurd comment. Anyone who knows Dan knows he’s a good coach and even better person. Ever think maybe he’s doing what’s best for his family? Maybe his wife is able to get a job? Know your facts before you go publicly shaming coaches you know nothing about.

Anyone who knows Dan can attest to his dedication to the sport of swimming, his family, his job and the life lessons taught through the experience of college athletics. Success in the pool, the classroom and life are of utmost importance to to coaches like Dan. Congrats to Dan for success in Miami and for taking the next step in the journey of coaching at FSU.
