YOUNG GUNS ARE SMOKING IN MEN’S 100m FREESTYLE
Two first-time Olympians dominated the heats of the men’s 100m freestyle dropping the only sub 48-second swims of the morning. Kyle Chalmers of Australia and Caeleb Dressel of the United States raced in the same heat. Chalmers got the better of Dressel in 47.90 while Dressel finished just one one-hundredth behind him in 47.91.
HOSSZU OUT – MIREIA BELMONTE GARCIA TAKES 200m BUTTERFLY TOP SEED
After winning two gold medals over the first three days of competition Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu no-showed the 200m butterfly. This opened up the field allowing Mereia Belmonta Garcia of Spain to pave the way into the semifinals. Both Americans Cammile Adams and Hali Flickinger posted similar times taking the second and third seeds behind her.
ANTON CHUPKOV DOMINATES 200m BREASTSTROKE HEATS
There was a clear leader in the men’s 200m breaststroke this morning and that was Anton Chupkov of Russia. The Russian youngster was dramatically faster than anyone else, dropping a sub 2:08 swim for a swift 2:07.96 performance.
USA, GREAT BRITAIN DUEL SET UP FOR 4×200 FREE RELAY
Tonight the USA and Great Britain will face off in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay. The Americans have never lost this event at the Olympic Games but were dethroned last summer by the British at the World Championships.
When I go to the official Rio website it says that the Great Britain team had a negative reaction time on one of the starts in the men’s 4×200 prelim relay. Do they still get to swim tonight?
Yep. reaction time of -0.03 allowed, after you’re out.

The USA has actually been beaten six times in the 4×200 (excluding 1980). These were 1908, 1912, 1932, 1936, 1956, and 2000.
USA also lost 4×200 in 1998/2001/2003 world championship to Australia as well.
