Katinka Hosszu A No-Show For Women’s 200 Fly Prelims

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

Double Olympic gold medallist Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was a no-show for this morning’s 200 fly prelims, as she’s chosen to focus all her energy on the 200 IM final tonight.

Hosszu was the 11th seed coming into the event, so her shot at a medal was certainly alive but it is definitely the weakest of the five individual events she entered here. Along with the 400 IM and 100 back that she’s already won gold in, Hosszu is the favorite in tonight’s 200 IM and now may be the favorite in the 200 back as well with Emily Seebohm appearing to be off form.

The 200 fly semi would have taken place roughly 50 minutes before the 200 IM final, not giving Hosszu much time to recover in preparation to take a run at her own world record and third gold medal. If the 200 IM final was scheduled before the 200 fly semis, there’s a much better chance she would have given this event a shot.

Hosszu didn’t scratch the event prior to the session, nor did she give a reason for the no-show, so she’ll receive a charge of 100 Swiss francs.

Her no-show opened the door for Canadian Audrey Lacroix, who, despite not having a great morning swim, finishes 16th and advances to the semi-finals.

At least now we don’t have to worry about a swimming matching Phelps’ 5 individual golds.

However, it does seem like a foregone conclusion to me that Hosszu will be the most successful swimmer at these games- over Ledecky, over Sjostrom, over Phelps

She’ll be the most successful individually, however Ledecky will probably get 4 golds and a silver.

What is the math, here?
A person who takes part in 4 events can win 5 medals?

I think it’s sort of mean when you qualify for an event and then decide not to compete in it. It’s one race in a long list of swimming races, but by qualifying she took away someone else’s spot, someone who most likely would have swam this morning.

So the only penalty for a No Show is a fine? USAS makes it a DQ for the rest of the meet if it isn’t a DFS.
