Rio Torch Relay Day 88: Six Cities In The State of Rio de Janeiro

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

Note: We originally reported the torch travelled through these six cities on day 87, when in fact, due to a mistake by Rio 2016 on Facebook, these were the cities for day 88.

After crossing the state border of Rio de Janeiro yesterday, the torch continued on day 88 through six more cities. The torch travelled an accumulative of 115 km east, beginning in Piraí and ending the day in Petrópolis.

Piraí, which translates to “River fish” in Tupi, has plenty of different tourist attractions including Lake Kopp and the “Three Jumps” Waterfall. It has a population of 25,000. From there it travelled to Barra do Piraí, a nearby city with a population of 95,000.

It continued through the cities of Vassouras and Paraíba do Sul, before heading to Tres Rios and ultimately Petrópolis. The torch will continue tomorrow through four more cities in Rio de Janeiro.

Check out the images from day 88:
