Navigating choppy conditions on Lac St-Jean in central Quebec, Canada on Thursday, the home nation defended its water by sweeping the 6th stop in the 9-meet 10k Marathon Swimming World Cup series.
On the men’s side, it was open water specialist Philippe Guertin of Canada who won by 4 seconds over American Chip Peterson. Germany’s Andreas Waschburger, a 2012 Olympian for his home country, took 3rd place in what was a well-named field given that most of the world is focused on final Olympic preparations.
The women’s race was even tighter to the finish, though it came across as the same order of nationalities, with Stephanie Horner of Canada winning in 2:06:15, followed by American Emily Brunemann and Germany’s Angela Maurer.
Each winner receives $2,500 with prize money available to each of the top 8 male and female finishers. The points earned here go toward the overall series standings which has $180,000 in total prize money available, including $30,000 to each of the top finishing male and female swimmers.
